The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) ended calendar year 2012 with December showing increases system wide from December 2011 of 11.7 percent by total cargo tonnage and 21.8 percent by auto and machinery units.

“Our total volume of 2.27 million [short] tons puts December among the top 10 months on record and the highest performing December ever,” said GPA Executive Director Curtis Foltz. “This figure, boosted in part by outstanding growth in sectors such as bulk and roll-on/roll-off cargo, is the result of GPA’s exceptional cargo diversity and overall performance.”

The December data also show containerized cargo up 4.2 percent to 1.76 million tons and container box movements up 2.2 percent to 219,128 TEUs.

Colonel’s Island in Brunswick and Savannah’s Ocean Terminal together handled 54,884 auto and machinery units, an increase of 18.2 percent that made December the GPA’s fifth busiest month for roll-on/roll-off cargo.

For first half FY 2012-13, the GPA reports: total cargo – 13.3 million tons (+4.1 percent); ro/ro   320,998 units (+21.8 percent); breakbulk cargo – 1.3 million tons (+10.9 percent); bulk cargo – 1.2 million tons (+62 percent); container traffic – 1.45 million TEUs (-1.1 percent). Its fiscal year begins July 1.

At its January 28 meeting, the GPA board heard an update on a project to upgrade eight ship-to-shore cranes to increase hoist speed and productivity. The $2.4 million contract was awarded in December, with work set to begin by the end of January.

Previously, the GPA purchased four new Post-Panamax ship-to-shore cranes for its Garden City Container Terminal in Savannah. The cranes are due to arrive in September, bringing the total to 27. Garden City Terminal also has 110 rubber-tired gantry cranes, with six more being assembled on terminal.
