Located on the Mediterranean Sea 256 nautical miles from the Straits of Gibraltar, Cartagena is one of Spain’s leading commercial seaports. Throughput in 2016 totaling more than 31 million metric tons, much of it petroleum, but also including dry bulk and general cargo. Container trade in 2016 amounted to nearly 100,000 TEUs and 1.2 million cargo tons.

The port has also experienced a dramatic growth in recent years as a port of call for cruise tourists taking advantage of the city's ancient cultural heritage which boasts of Carthaginian, Roman, Byzantine and Arabic ruins as well as a large collection of Baroque, Neoclassical and Art Nouveau architecture. Cartagena received more than 187,000 cruise passengers in 2016 and is expecting at least 230,000 in 2017.

Cartagena is the location as well of a major Spanish naval base. It is the namesake of the Colombian port city of Cartagena.
