One of Chile’s two largest general cargo ports, San Antonio, is connected by rail and highway to a hinterland encompassing the national capital region of Santiago and extending eastward into Argentina. Principal facilities consist of four dock complexes serving the breakbulk, container, ro/ro, bulk liquid and dry bulk trades. Main channel depth is 13.5 meters/44.3 feet at mean low water. Among the ocean carriers providing liner service are APL, HMM, Maersk, CSAV, CCNI, Hamburg Süd, Maruba, MSC, MOL, and NYK.

In 2015, San Antonio handled nearly 17.4 million metric tons of cargo. Containers alone accounted for 11.7 million tons and the balance consisting of breakbulk (936,413 tons), dry bulk (3.5 million tons) and liquid bulk (1.2 million tons). In 2015, San Antonio was Chile’s top container port with just over 1.1 million TEUs.  It also led the nation in auto imports with a vehicle count of 277,803.
