Clarkson’s Register provides a comprehensive and highly detailed profile of the world liner fleet, including fully cellular container ships, multipurpose cargo vessels and ro/ro ships.

It opens with a survey of the ship market in 2015 that includes summary statistical data and an analysis of recent developments and trends. The introductory commentary is followed by stand-alone directories to containerships, multipurpose general cargo vessels and ro/ro ships (including car carriers).

Each directory consists of three sections:
  • A market review followed by statistical tables and figures describing the development of the world fleet, salient data on major shipbuilders and ship owners and a survey of market conditions.
  • A "Ship Finder" index that lists the names of vessels in ascending order of capacity by year of construction and an "Index of Ex-Names" of vessels.
  • A "Glossary of Particulars" for each vessel – name and ownership; hull dimensions; tonnages (DWT, gross tons, etc.); cargo capacity (TEUs, vehicle numbers, etc.), and other details such as fuel consumption and cargo handling gear.
The book concludes with a directory to company owners, complete with contact information, Web site address, and vessel rosters.

The statistical data in most cases is current through January 1, 2016. As of that date, for example, the world cellular container ship fleet consisted of 5,249 vessels with total capacity of more than 19.7 million TEUs. The order book consisted of 455 ships and slot capacity of nearly 3.8 million TEUs. Post-Panamaxers of 12,000 TEUs or greater accounted for 31.4 percent of the vessels and 63.9 percent of the slot capacity on order at that time.
