New Container Service Starting at Port of Houston Authority

A new direct all-water container service between the U.S Gulf and Asia jointly operated by Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Company will be calling the Port of Houston beginning next month.

The new service by the 2M Alliance features the "Lone Star Express" by MSC and "TP18" by Maersk. The first sailing is scheduled to depart Asia May 2, with Houston as the first U.S. inbound port call. The full rotation will be the Chinese ports of Qingdao, Ningbo, Shanghai, Xiamen, and Yantian followed by Busan (South Korea), Cristobal (Panama) and the U.S. ports of Houston, Mobile and Miami.

Estimated inbound transit times to Houston are 26 days from Yantian and 23 days from Busan. The vessels deployed will have a capacity of about 4,500 TEUs.

"This new service will enhance the existing weekly Asian services operated by CMA CGM, COSCO and Hanjin calling at the port authority," said Executive Director Roger Guenther. "These additional Trans-Pacific all-water services demonstrate our ability to provide a cost-effective supply chain option connecting Asia to local and key Midwest markets via the Gulf of Mexico."

Container throughput at the port authority’s terminals topped 2.0 million TEUs for the first time ever in 2015.

Port of Oshawa Welcomes First international Vessel of the Season

The Port of Oshawa greeted its first international vessel of the 2016 season on April 13 at a special Top Hat ceremony. M/V Wigeon, a 37,238 dwt bulk carrier registered in Liberia, arrived at the Lake Ontario port from Portugal carrying more than 20,000 metric tons of steel rebar.

The rebar will be used for building construction in the Durham and Greater Toronto areas. Steel was Oshawa‘s leading cargo last year, with volume amounting to some 190,000 tons.

"We are delighted to welcome Captain Monem Bachar, Master of M/V Wigeon and his crew to the Port of Oshawa," said Donna Taylor, president and CEO of the Oshawa Port Authority, who presented the captain with the traditional top hat. "We’re also pleased to continue to play an important role in supporting local industry and the economy."

In 2015, the Port of Oshawa handled 49 vessels and more than 378,000 tons of cargo that included potash, magnesium chloride and asphalt as well as steel.
