Port of Oakland Marine Terminal Re-Opens After Upgrade

A Port of Oakland marine terminal has re-opened following two months of modernization. The Ben E. Nutter terminal in Oakland’s Outer Harbor began renovations in November and closed last month to complete improvements that included:
  • Rebuilt entrance gates for harbor truckers
  • More than 100 new pieces of cargo-handling equipment
  • A new terminal operating system

The terminal began receiving export cargo and empty containers during the final week of December. Vessel operations resumed January 8 with arrival of the 1,100-foot Ever Liberal.

"Across the port we’re taking steps to improve performance and efficiency," said Maritime Director John Driscoll. "We’re pleased that the management of Ben E. Nutter Terminal shares our desire to upgrade operations in Oakland."

The terminal is managed by Everport Terminal Services and serves all Evergreen Line ships calling Oakland. The facility occupies 29.9 hectares (73.9 acres, and is served by 2 berths totaling 657.4 meters (2,157 feet) in length, water depths, MLLW, of 15.2 meters (50 feet) and 4 ship-to-shore gantry cranes.

Its namesake, former Port of Oakland Executive Director Ben E. Nutter, served as president of the American Association of Port Authorities in 1974-75. That position was retitled chairman of the board in 1981.
