AAHOA will raise money and awareness for homeless and trafficked youth during the 2023 AAHOA Convention & Trade Show taking place April 11-14, in Los Angeles, CA. The event includes a merchandise store that will sell AAHOACON23-branded t-shirts, jackets and socks, where up to 80% of the proceeds will support Covenant House of California (CHC).

CHC is a non-profit youth shelter that provides sanctuary and support for youth experiencing homelessness or who are survivors of human trafficking, ages 18-24. The non-profit believes that no young person deserves to be homeless; that every young person in California deserves shelter, food, clothing, education, recovery … and most importantly, to be loved. CHC provides a full continuum of services to meet the physical, emotional, educational, vocational, and spiritual well-being of young people, to provide them with the best chance for success in independence.

When you stop by the AAHOACON23 merch store in April, you’ll pick up incredible AAHOA apparel and support the hundreds of homeless youth who come through CHC’s doors.

AAHOA is honored to partner with CHC to make a difference in Los Angeles.

David Kong, Founder and Principal of DEI Advisors, recently interviewed Lina Patel, AAHOA Female Director Eastern Division. Lina owned her first hotel in the early 2000s, when it was difficult for women to get into hotel ownership. During the interview, she shares her experience as a woman hotelier and how the industry has progressed over the years.

“Today, we have so many organizations and brands that have collaborated and created programs specifically for women hotel ownership. Education is out there. Connection is out there. Networking is out there for women to take on this opportunity,” Lina said. “Women continue to face some challenges. I believe it can still be difficult for women to walk into a bank and apply for a loan. The first question the lender still asks is, ‘where is your husband?’ But, I’m confident that the industry as a whole is making the necessary changes to move forward.”

She also discusses her passion for serving with AAHOA and the great work being done at the association to open more doors for women in hospitality.

“AAHOA has always provided a platform for women to network, learn, and grow. There have always been Town Hall meetings, seminars, and networking events specifically geared towards women,” Lina explained. “We’ve held over 60 education sessions and networking events throughout my time on the AAHOA Board. Last year, we branded what we’ve been doing and called it HerOwnership. We launched the HerOwnership Conference and invited brands, lenders, and insurance companies to talk about their women's advancement initiatives.”

Lina’s success didn’t happen overnight. She also offers lessons from her disappointments and setbacks. You can watch or listen to the full interview today.

AAHOA is thrilled to have released its Point 9 webinar earlier this week and continue to help Franchisees succeed in 2023. The Point 9 webinar indicates that “in the event a dispute between a Franchisor and Franchisee has not been resolved by participating in an informal, in-person meeting with authorized representatives from the parties or by participating in mediation proceedings, the party pursuing its claims in a court of law should do so in the county and state in which the subject Facility is located.”

In this webinar, AAHOA President & CEO Laura Lee Blake is joined by Lifetime Member Pimal Patel to discuss why Point 9 is a key point to many Franchisees.

“The Franchisors have ample resources. They can hire attorneys. They can easily come to the state where your hotel is located. To your county, to your city,” AAHOA President & CEO Laura Lee Blake explained. “Instead of you, as a small business owner, being required to travel to them. Let’s make it fair and bring it specifically to wherever the facility is located.”

Truist Securities reports,“As we get further into the quarter, we are beginning to see the easiest of the y/y Omicron comps fade (RevPAR +13.5% last week vs. +20-30% weekly for most of 2023 so far). Because of the Omicron comp, we still continue to see upper chain scales significantly outperforming the lower end (early to mid-week Upper Upscale RevPAR up ~+35% and Luxury and Upscale up ~+25% y/y). Analyzing last week's performance vs. 2019, we believe the timing of the Super Bowl last week and President’s Day week in the comparable week in 2019 helped last week’s results. Super Bowl timing shift vs. 2019 (2/3/19 vs. 2/12/23) resulted in Phoenix RevPAR on Sunday up +232.7%. Additionally, the comparable week in 2019 contained the President’s Day/week holiday whereas last week did not, helping end of the week results as Friday and Saturday RevPAR was up +38% and +55% respectively vs. comparable days in 2019. Upscale RevPAR: +16.6% y/y and +6.4% vs. 2019; Upper Midscale RevPAR: +11.4% y/y and +13.4% vs. 2019.”
