AAHOA News

On Wednesday in Dallas, TX, AAHOA announced the results of a new study conducted in partnership with Oxford Economics, a global leader in forecasting and quantitative analysis, on the economic impact and industry influence of the association’s nearly 20,000 members. The study analyzed the share of U.S. hotels and rooms owned by AAHOA Members, hotel operations, hotel guest ancillary spending, capital investment, and indirect and induced impacts supported by AAHOA hotels in other parts of the U.S. economy. Among the study’s impressive conclusions, the 34,260 AAHOA Member-owned hotels account for 60 percent of all hotels in the U.S., 3.1 million guestrooms, and 2.2 million direct impact jobs. AAHOA's story is made up of the stories of thousands of hoteliers living out the American Dream. As part of our 2021 AAHOA Convention & Trade Show, we are collecting the stories of the people who make AAHOA great – people like you. Glenn Haussman's "No Vacancy Podcast" is broadcasting live from right outside the Trade Show at AAHOACON21 and we're asking you to stop by the booth to share with Glenn how the pandemic impacted your business and how AAHOA has helped you on the road to recovery.

One thing you can say for AAHOA Members is they really know how to have a good time! We kicked off AAHOACON21 with a Welcome Reception Tuesday night at The Exchange and Jaxon Beer Garden in downtown Dallas. It was our chance to celebrate the return of in-person events and networking and celebrate we did. Thousands of attendees descended on the unique, innovative downtown venue for a night of networking, food, and fun. Then, on Wednesday night, attendees let off some steam after a day of education, networking and deal-making by converging on Texas Live! for our wildly popular Block Party. Texas Live! offered 11 different venues to choose from, all under one roof, gave attendees the unparalleled opportunity to network with peers, industry executives, and other hospitality professionals. It was an unforgettable celebration of the hospitality industry's resilience and fortitude. A huge thank you to and Best Western Hotels & Resorts for sponsoring the Welcome Reception and to our numerous sponsors of the Block Party who helped make these networking receptions possible.

The August 2021 issue of Today's Hotelier magazine is now available. Also, Biran Patel looks back on his tenure as Chairman and encourages members to engage with one another, lift each other up, and drive the innovations needed on the road to recovery, while Interim President & CEO Ken Greene addresses the recent rise in hate crimes targeting Asian Americans and urges AAHOA Members to speak out against it. Truist Securities (formerly SunTrust Robinson Humphrey) reports, “Last week’s RevPAR was up against a -51.1% comparable result in 2020 vs. -54.8% in the prior week’s 2-year run-rate. On a 2-year run-rate, RevPAR was +0.1% vs. -4.2% in the prior week’s 2-year run-rate. Upscale RevPAR: +113.1% y/y and -8.9% over 2 years; Upper Midscale RevPAR: +89.6% y/y and +4.8% over 2 years. Late July leisure demand did not appear to be hurt from the variants. That said, and this is completely our gut feel, we would have anticipated more of a group occupancy pickup from leisure events (especially weddings) into the summer combined with the very modest incremental demand recovery of corporate group. The flatlining of absolute occupancy around 12% so far this summer (down ~45 to 50% versus 2019) feels to us to be a bit of a disappointment.”
