AAHOA News

ATLANTA, Ga., Jun. 30 – Interim AAHOA President & CEO Ken Greene issued a statement (link) in response to the murder over motel owner, Zeshan Chaudhry, of Vernon, CT.:
“A life taken over a $10 pool pass dispute. When will the violence end? America's hotel owners are shocked and outraged by this senseless act of violence against a small business owner simply doing his job. The Vernon Motel 6 owner, Zeshan Chaudhry, was only 30 years old when he was shot multiple times on Sunday. He had a long life ahead of him, and we offer our deepest sympathies to his family, and our community is mourning with them today. Hate has no place in our Members’ hotels, or in any hotels.” Read the full statement.

AAHOA Interim President & CEO Ken Greene recently issued a statement in response to several lawsuits filed by hoteliers against their brands:
“We are aware of several lawsuits recently filed by hoteliers against their brand. While not everyone involved is an AAHOA Member, we are committed to protecting the business interests of the hoteliers we serve. Because litigation is often the product of lack of necessary communication or a failure to reach a mutual understanding, AAHOA sees these lawsuits as an opportunity to increase dialogue, understanding, and communication between franchisees and franchisors – which will in turn create a better brand and customer experience." AAHOA and the American Hotel & Lodging Association, the nation’s two largest hotel and lodging associations, have joined forces to create the American Hospitality Alliance. AHA will promote the hospitality industry at the state and local levels by harnessing the power and influence of industry leaders and directing it toward advocacy and political engagement. The strategic partnership, which also includes leading state hospitality associations, will encourage pooling resources and streamlining efforts to educate local lawmakers. “The majority of hotels are small businesses. That is why the owners and operators are particularly well-suited to inform lawmakers about policies and regulations that will accelerate the industry’s resurgence," AAHOA Interim President & CEO Ken Greene said. "This coalition could not have come at a more important time as the hotel industry prepares to welcome back guests.”

This summer, AAHOA and AHLA are co-hosting the 2021 Virtual Action Summit (VAS) on July 20-22. This FREE virtual summit presents a great opportunity for hoteliers to have a face-to-face conversation with their elected officials about the catastrophic effects the pandemic has had on the hotel industry: millions of jobs lost, thousands of hotels closed permanently, with others still in danger of doing so, and a crippling labor shortage. VAS gives hoteliers the chance to pressure Congress to pass the Save Hotel Jobs Act, the hotel-specific relief bill that is the industry’s best hope for recovery, and also to lock in GSA per-diem rates at pre-pandemic levels. But space is limited and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis, so sign up now to lock in your spot.

In the Market

Truist Securities (formerly SunTrust Robinson Humphrey) reports, “Last week’s RevPAR was up against a -56.5% comparable result in 2020 vs. -60.3% in the prior week’s 2-year run-rate. On a 2-year run-rate, RevPAR was down 7.8% vs. down 13.8% in the prior week’s 2-year run-rate and far stronger than the -27% to -33% range we saw throughout much of the springtime. Upscale RevPAR was +119.6% and -18.9% over 2 years; Upper Midscale was +96.2% and -1.9% over 2 years. While some groups are meeting in offseason due to an inability to meet early this year, STR noted national Group occupancy of 11.4% last week as 55.7% below 2019 levels. We think STR has correctly called out the variance of weekend and weekday group as reflective of where the improvement is really showing up – heavily weekend social group (e.g. weddings, family reunions, etc. that got rescheduled to this summer), not from large corporate/association group. On the other hand, we caution to ignore clickbait articles suggesting a material group recovery has already transpired (some data vendors are pushing this narrative, not STR) or that strength in Las Vegas summer travel suggests some radical change to corporate/association group. ”
