AAHOA Member Jay Shah of Hersha Hospitality Management was honored with the 2018 HOTELS magazine's Hotelier of the World award earlier this week. Nominated and elected by a group of his industry peers, this award recognizes Shah as a member of the hospitality industry who has defined standards of service, delivered astounding operational excellence and performance, exhibited innovation in management and maintained involvement in the greater good and support of his community.
  
AAHOA past Board Member Timesh (Timmy) Patel and AAHOA Ambassador Jyoti Sarolia will speak next week at TiEcon Southwest 2018 in Long Beach, CA. Timesh will join the "Catering to Millennials" panel, and Jyoti will moderate a panel focused on "Creating New Experiences" in hotels. Due to incredible growth in AAHOA membership over the past year. Arkansas will become its own region; the Gulf Region will consist of Louisiana & Mississippi; Alabama will become its own region; and the Florida Panhandle will re-join the Florida Region. SunTrust Robinson Humphrey reports, “Midscale (+3.0%) was the strongest chain scale for branded hotels; Upper Upscale and Upscale were the weakest at -0.4%. Upper Midscale (+0.2%) also underperformed the industry average. Day of week results were all over the place: Monday RevPAR of -3.3%, Tuesday of -0.1%, a jump to +3.7% and +6.6% for Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, down again to +0.6% on Friday and up to +4.8% on Sunday. Groups across the country are calling on Congress to address maintenance costs in national parks in order to save some of America's most historic places. While the National Park Service oversees iconic landscapes such as Mount Rainier National Park, it also preserves historic sites and buildings. Chris Moore, executive director of Washington Trust for Historic Preservation, says without proper stewardship, unique places like these won't last. (Source: Public News Service)
  
Managers of hotels are going to great lengths to entice large hotels and conventions, doing so by accommodating a range of customized and relatively unique requests for such clients. What this looks like in many cases, is a set of hotel management and staffers who are willing to do almost anything to make lucrative conventions, even if it means breaking from brand-mandated procedure, hospitality experts say. Nearly 5,000 ADA lawsuits were filed in federal court for alleged website violations in the first six months of 2018, according to an analysis by Seyfarth Shaw, a law firm that specializes in defending such cases. The firm predicted that the number of lawsuits will climb to nearly 10,000 by the end of the year, a 30% increase from 2017. (Source: Los Angeles Times)
