AAHOA News

AAHOA President & CEO Cecil Staton joined the Illinois Hotel & Lodging Association (IHLA), American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA), Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, and countless others in the fight against human trafficking during a No Room for Trafficking event last week. "In this fight, it is imperative that we forge strong and constructive partnerships with lawmakers and law enforcement agencies," Cecil said in his introduction of the law enforcement panel. "We all have the same objectives, but collaboration is key to ensuring that we’re all on the same page and working together as effectively as possible." The event concluded National Slavery & Human Trafficking Month but not AAHOA's efforts to eradicate human trafficking. Take the training and join this ongoing fight.

AAHOA's efforts to combat human trafficking were prominent recently during National Slavery & Human Trafficking Month.
  • AAHOA hosted a live human trafficking awareness panel discussion that helped hoteliers know the signs of human trafficking and how to feel empowered to take action. (If you were unable to attend the live session, you may view it here.)
  • We partnered with AHLA and local hospitality associations to host No Room for Trafficking events in Miami and Chicago.
  • AAHOA teamed with Vision Hospitality Group to offer trafficking awareness training to the public in Chattanooga, TN.
  • And to close out the month, we participated in the White House Summit on Trafficking. (Read full press release here.)
These are only a few of the highlights of a month in which AAHOA keenly focused its efforts on wiping out this crime. Thus far, AAHOA has trained more than 4,000 hotel owners and workers in human trafficking awareness and prevention, and our efforts will continue until this scourge is eradicated. Join the fight, get trained today.

Tax season is here and, for hoteliers, it can be a stressful time as you may be asking, "How much will I owe this year?" But did you know you don't have to accept your property's tax assessment? AAHOA has partnered with O'Connor Tax Consulting Firm to host a series of Dinner & Learn events across the nation to teach hoteliers the power of banding together and filing appeals to get their taxes lowered. Check the events calendar for one near you and register to attend.

In the Market

SunTrust Robinson Humphrey reports, “Luxury (+7.4%) was the strongest chain scale for branded hotels; Midscale was the weakest at -1.2%. Upscale (+4.0%) performed in line with the industry average; Upper Midscale (+1.9%) underperformed. Last week's RevPAR headline result was materially impacted by the shift of the Super Bowl to Miami from Atlanta. Miami RevPAR was +68.4%, entirely rate driven as Miami is already in high season in February. Comparatively, Atlanta RevPAR was -41.1% (almost all rate driven). Importantly, Miami ADRs are significantly higher than Atlanta in clean-comp years (2019 ADR Atlanta: $124; 2018 ADR Miami: $239).  A variety of other markets had relatively strong results, more occupancy than rate driven. We assume the benefit is more transient corporate than leisure or group focused as much of the strength was in mid-week occupancy. We do not consider the strong individual business travel trends last week to be indicative of a trend. Just as importantly, we see no material impact in last week's results from the coronavirus news.”

New hotel brands are launching continuously, but hoteliers are becoming more critical while weighing the pros and cons of teaming up with brands. Brand execs want allegiance from owners and managers, so owners are focusing in on why guests return to the same brands.
