In the Market

SunTrust Robinson Humphrey reports, “Luxury (+6.0%) was the strongest chain scale for branded hotels; Midscale was the weakest at -3.3%. Upper Midscale (+0.2%) slightly underperformed the industry average. While headline RevPAR was within our expectations, day of week RevPAR was quite volatile given Halloween moving to a Thursday this year from a Wednesday last year. Increasingly we view this holiday as having greater impact to corporate travel and in some cases a positive benefit to hotels catering to parties/activities.”

AAHOA has partnered with Businesses Ending Slavery and Trafficking (BEST) to provide Human Trafficking Awareness Training to hoteliers across the U.S. According to BEST, only 8 percent of hoteliers can spot cases of human trafficking before the training. After the training, that number rises to 44 percent. Nonprofit Ho’ola Na Pua is partnering with Hawaii's tourism industry to provide training and awareness as well.

The labor shortage is a top concern for hoteliers. Hospitality has a rather high turn-over rate to begin with, so the gig economy may have an answer for hoteliers. The new app Qwick performs like a rideshare app for job seekers with experience in hospitality and can match them with the appropriate properties.
