Upper Midwest Regional Director Kalpesh Joshi kicked off a busy season with a Regional Conference & Trade Show in Minneapolis last Thursday. It was the first of three scheduled for 2019 in the Upper Midwest Region. Ben Wogsland, director of Government Relations for Hospitality Minnesota, and Drew Halunen, senior communications advisor and outreach director for Sen. Amy Klobuchar, were the featured speakers, while Chairwoman Jagruti Panwala delivered the AAHOA update. The next two events will be in Des Moines, IA, (August 12) and Elmhurst, IL (August 22).
AAHOA will host the Northwest Region Charity Golf Tournament on August 19 at Camas Meadows Golf Club in Camas, WA. This fun day of competitive golf is being held on one of Washington's premier golf courses and will raise money for Make-A-Wish Oregon, Businesses Ending Slavery & Trafficking (BEST), and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Foundation. Following the event, AAHOA will host a dinner and awards ceremony and also will hold a raffle to raise additional funds for these worthy causes. AAHOA on the Hill
America’s hoteliers applauded the introduction of a bipartisan measure to secure long-term, dedicated funding for Brand USA, an organization that encourages inbound tourism by promoting the United States as a destination for international travelers. The legislation, introduced by Senators Roy Blunt (R-MO), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Cory Gardner (R-CO), and Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), extends the current funding mechanism through 2027. In the Market
SunTrust Robinson Humphrey reports, “Economy (-2.8%) was the ‘strongest’ chain scale for branded hotels; Upscale was the weakest at -3.7%. Upper Midscale (-3.1%) underperformed the industry average. The weekly data for the week ending July 6 presented the benefit from the timing of July 4; last week's data ending July 13 was in many respects the reversal effect. The aggregate RevPAR average over the past two weeks was just +1.2% (not a run-rate statistic due to the holiday impact but unimpressive nonetheless). New Orleans RevPAR was -17.1% driven by Hurricane Barry’s impact, with weekend occupancy down 45%.” For more, read the full report.
