AAHOA News

AAHOA held its 2019 Spring National Advocacy Conference in Washington D.C. on March 11-12, and AAHOA Members turned up in force to meet with lawmakers on Capitol Hill. Our members stressed four issues critical to the hospitality industry: tax cuts, Brand USA, human trafficking awareness, and the Trademark License Protection Act. Prior to their meetings, members participated in a role-playing session to teach them how to be effective when speaking with lawmakers, and they also heard from industry experts and legislators.

AAHOA Young Professional Director Eastern Division Purvi Panwala was a guest speaker at the Tourism and Hotels Globally Empowering Women and Sustainable Development event this morning in New York City. Purvi, president of Purvi LLC, participated in a panel at the UN Commission on the Status of Women, the UN’s largest gathering on gender equality and women’s rights, and the single largest forum for UN Member States.

Chairman Hitesh (HP) Patel, Female Director Western Division Nimisha Patel, Young Professional Director Western Division Nishant (Neal) Patel, South Pacific Regional Ambassador Jyoti Sarolia, and former Director at Large Vipul Dayal will be guest speakers at the Boutique Design West Trade Fair today in L.A. They will participate in a session titled “We Said, They Said: What Hotel Owners and Designers Can Learn From—and Teach—Each Other” at the event for hospitality design professionals.

SunTrust Robinson Humphrey reports, “Luxury (+0.4%) was the "strongest" chain scale for branded hotels; Upscale was the weakest at -3.9%. Upper Midscale (-2.4%) and Midscale (-2.8%) also underperformed the industry average. Two primary takeaways from last week's results: 1) Tough group comp y/y resulted in Group RevPAR of -7.0% last week. We don't believe the negative result was holiday shift driven although there could have been some noise due to St. Patrick's Day. 2) Supply growth remains a clear headwind to occupancy y/y growth (U.S. occupancy was -2.4%; Upper Upscale was -4.0% and Upscale -3.9%).”
