As SunTrust Robinson Humphrey wrote, “Upper Midscale (+8.8%) was the strongest chain scale for branded hotels; Luxury was the weakest at -4.6%. Midscale (+3.9%) underperformed the industry average. Results were extremely variable last week, both in terms of segmentation and results by chain scale. We believe this is largely attributable to two factors: 1) the shift of Christmas to a Tuesday in 2018 from a Monday in 2017 and 2) higher volatility in results given the very low occupancy week.” For more, read the full report.

The state of Massachusetts has a new first-in-the-nation law regulating Airbnb. Gov. Charlie Baker said the law, which takes effect July 1, is an effort toward “leveling the playing field for short-term rental operators who use their properties as de facto hotels.” The law may help the area move forward on taxing and requiring Airbnb to comply with local health and zoning regulations.
