On Wednesday, October 24, AAHOA Treasurer Biran Patel will speak at the Red Roof Regional Meeting in Houston, TX. At the event, Biran will provide updates on the hospitality industry and will share AAHOA's accomplishments over the year in advocacy, education, and networking opportunities.
  
AAHOA will host two regional meetings next week: one on October 23 in Houston, TX and the other on October 25 in Charlotte, NC – both of which will offer free Human Trafficking Awareness Training sessions. In Houston, we’ll be joined by guest speakers Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and Brian Sullivan of THLA, and in Charlotte, Congresswoman Alma Adams, NC Attorney General Josh Stein, and Lynn Minges of NCRLA. Women hoteliers from across the country will gather in Charlotte, NC on October 26-27 for two days of networking and education designed especially for them. With a theme of “Hospitality Law & Technology,” attendees will have the chance to ask hospitality lawyers about top issues in our industry, learn how to embrace new technologies, and hear from Keynote Speaker Amy Vetter about how to use technology to build relationships. On October 23, AAHOA Lifetime Member Sunil (Sunny) Tolani will be presented with the “Nelson Mandela Leadership Award” for Social Services by the International Congress of Non-Resident Indians. The award, extended to outstanding achievers in their respective fields, will be presented in London, UK next week.

SunTrust Robinson Humphrey reports, “Midscale (+1.5%) was the strongest chain scale for branded hotels; Luxury was the weakest at -1.2%. Upper Midscale (-0.4%) also underperformed the industry average. Last week's STR results reflected a difficult y/y comp in Texas and Florida from the 2017 hurricanes and the negative impact from Hurricane Michael. With some property damage loss estimates reaching $10 billion, areas affected by Hurricane Michael are beginning to reopen and pick up the pieces. “Fueled by unseasonably high 84-degree sea surface temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico and unhindered by any prior landfall, Hurricane Michael rapidly intensified shortly before making landfall at close to Category 5 intensity,” said Dr. Peter Sousounis, VP/director of meteorology with catastrophe risk modeling firm AIR Worldwide. The Washington D.C. City Council is on the verge of approving some of the most strict regulations in the country on homesharing sites like Airbnb, HomeAway, and VRBO. The city and hotel industry, which is pushing for the rules, say they are helping preserve affordable housing in D.C., which they claim is being threatened by Airbnb. (Source: The Hill)
  
Google and Expedia have partnered to make it easier than ever to book your next hotel room. This week, Expedia launched the Expedia Action for the Google Assistant. With the partnership, customers now have the ability to book and manage their travel plans through hands-free voice commands on any Google Assistant-enabled device, including the Google Pixel phone, the Google Home, and Google Home Mini.
