AAHOA on the Hill
The National Labor Relations Board proposed a rule that would return the joint employer standard to its historical definition. This would overturn the 2015 Browning-Ferris Industries ruling that expanded the definition to include entities such as franchisers. Unless the joint employer standard is clarified, small business owners remain at risk of losing control over the day-to-day management of their business. The NLRB wants to hear from you about this proposed rule change and will accept public comments until November 13, 2018.

SunTrust Robinson Humphrey reports, “Midscale (+1.5%) was the strongest chain scale for branded hotels; Luxury was the weakest at -1.2%. Upper Midscale (-0.4%) also underperformed the industry average. Last week's STR results reflected a difficult y/y comp in Texas and Florida from the 2017 hurricanes and the negative impact from Hurricane Michael. With some property damage loss estimates reaching $10 billion, areas affected by Hurricane Michael are beginning to reopen and pick up the pieces. “Fueled by unseasonably high 84-degree sea surface temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico and unhindered by any prior landfall, Hurricane Michael rapidly intensified shortly before making landfall at close to Category 5 intensity,” said Dr. Peter Sousounis, VP/director of meteorology with catastrophe risk modeling firm AIR Worldwide.
