AAHOA on the Hill

On Wednesday, AAHOA President & CEO Chip Rogers met with lawmakers about the importance of travel and tourism to the American economy. The meetings were part of a broader effort to educate lawmakers by the Visit U.S. Coalition, a broad cross-section of industries that have come together to address the decline in international travelers to the U.S. that began in 2015. The coalition launched a new video featuring Chip Rogers and several hotel and travel industry CEOs discussing how tourism is a key driver of the American economy.

In recent news, President Trump signed the Small Business 7(a) Lending Oversight Reform Act into law. The bipartisan bill, which passed the House and Senate unanimously, preserves the valuable 7(a) loan program, updates the credit elsewhere test, increases oversight of the program and transparency to Congress, and provides greater flexibility for the Administrator to increase the program’s authorization cap in an emergency. As SunTrust Robinson Humphrey wrote, "Luxury (+5.1%) was the strongest chain scale for branded hotels; Midscale was the weakest at +1.6%. Upper Midscale (+1.7%) also underperformed the overall U.S. hotel industry average. The strongest days of the week were once again likely driven by mid-week Corporate (Monday-Thursday RevPAR averaging ~ +3.5%), likely reflective of a continued small uptick in business travel for both individual and group business." Read the full report here.
