In a proclamation issued by the White House last week, President Donald Trump designated January as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Human trafficking prevention and awareness is an issue of great importance to AAHOA. The association has partnered with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Polaris Project and Businesses Ending Slavery and Trafficking to provide free training materials for hotel owners and their employees. Start the new year off right by taking advantage of the training materials and resources available at aahoa.com/humantraffickingresources, or by registering yourself or staff for the Human Trafficking & Prevention Training being offered at #AAHOACON2018.  
AAHOA will acknowledge member accomplishments at the 2018 AAHOA Convention & Trade Show. Anyone can nominate an AAHOA member for an award. Detailed award descriptions are available on the convention website: aahoa.com/convention. Nominations must be submitted by Jan. 15, 2018.

January is National Mentoring Month

The White House issued a statement this week recognizing January as National Mentoring Month. In the workforce, the importance of professional guidance cannot be understated. AAHOA’s Mentor Match program will launch with its first class of mentors and mentees later this month. U.S. RevPAR for the week ending Dec. 30, 2017, was down (-6.7%) from the prior week's result of +7.6 percent, per STR. The Christmas and New Year’s holidays seem to be the cause of the slump. A survey indicating sexual harassment of hotel housekeepers is widespread has prompted a California state lawmaker to propose requiring employers to provide "panic button" devices to their employees so they can summon help if abused by a guest.
