Participants will also have the opportunity to listen and learn about other topics including the state of the domestic and international hotel and lodging industry from a legal perspective, the potential impact of the current administration on labor law issues and cybersecurity, and best practices mitigating risk from shifting immigration policies.

Several members met with Congressman Phil Roe (R-TN) yesterday for a roundtable discussion on top priorities including tax reform and the joint employer standard. Roe is supportive of H.R. 3441, the Save Local Business Act. If enacted, the law would allow AAHOA’s small business owners to refocus on creating jobs and spurring economic development throughout the country. For AAHOA members, reinstating a clear definition of the joint employer standard is vital, and Congressman Roe’s patronage is appreciated.

A new form of financing that places an assessment on a hotel’s property tax bill, CPACE lending, opens up options for hotel owners looking to make energy-efficient improvements to their properties. Traditionally, owners seeking to make environmentally friendly and sustainable improvements to their hotels have had to take out a bank loan or raise the capital themselves. Now there is another option as commercial property assessed clean energy, or CPACE, lending is gaining popularity among hoteliers.

Considering all of the many components of a positive guest experience during even just a 24-hour stay, and how many guests are in a hotel on any given night, it shouldn't be surprising to any hotelier that at some point during a shift every colleague is likely to encounter complaints. Surely we can and should do all that is possible to prevent shortcomings, but it is also essential to train everyone how to respond in such a way as to not only fix what is broken, but also to show compassion for the guests’ inconveniences.

Today's Hotelier: In Case You Missed It

For many Americans, back to school means back to worrying about college debt. In 1980, the inflation-adjusted average cost for one year of tuition and fees at a public four-year in-state university was $2,340. Since then, expectations surrounding college attendance and increasing government intrusion in the education market has caused the cost of higher education to skyrocket.

The numbers can be a bit mind boggling. It’s well known millennials are oriented toward buying experiences versus stuff. But it turns out this attitude isn’t unique to the United States. China’s burgeoning middle class is showing the same sensibility, which presents huge possibilities – and new challenges – for the travel industry.

Global is a big word, and now that I have your attention, I want to define global in a hotel setting. Global refers to all sources of revenue and its corresponding profit picture: A global perspective on revenue management that yields the highest possible profit because we understand and apply a BIGGER view to our business.
