Hotelier Weekly
September 21, 2017
The world’s largest hospitality convention and trade show will take to the nation’s capital in just a few short months. From March 27-30, thousands of hotel industry professionals and vendors will convene to make the types of connections that maximize business potential. If you have not already registered, now is the time. You do not want to miss out on this year’s dynamic speaker slate, robust education sessions, endless networking opportunities, great food and entertainment options, and expansive trade show floor featuring hundreds of vendors. Members who register between now and Dec. 1, 2017, will be entered to win a four-night stay at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center during #AAHOACON18—and lock in early-bird pricing at the same time.
The Sheraton New Orleans Hotel will host the 2017 Red Roof Brand Conference, Sept. 24-26. Among numerous networking opportunities and education sessions, the conference will feature a Forum for Leadership for Women Entrepreneurs. The 90-minute session, lead by Dr. Lalia Rach, an internationally known business consultant and speaker, will focus on pathways to success through operational leadership. Red Roof Inn’s Chief Marketing Officer Marina MacDonald provides a little more insight on the forum in a Hotel Management profile. AAHOA will host a brand alliance meeting on Sept. 26 during the event. It’s a great opportunity to join the AAHOA officers and Red Roof Inn brand executives to learn more about the AAHOA/Red Roof partnership.

AAHOA in the News
Jeffrey DeBoer, president and CEO of The Real Estate Roundtable, urged a Senate tax committee this week to protect Section 1031 like-kind exchanges when writing the tax reform bill. Promoting and protecting like-kind exchanges has been a key priority for AAHOA for several years because the tax provision promotes growth and job creation. AAHOA President and CEO Chip Rogers called DeBoer’s testimony illuminating.
AAHOA President and CEO Chip Rogers joined Robert Cresanti, president and CEO of the International Franchise Association, and Katherine Lugar, president and CEO of the American Hotel and Lodging Association, in penning a new op-ed for The Hill that urges Congress to take quick action on the joint employer issue. The bipartisan bill, the Save Local Business Act, would restore the traditional joint employer standard that business owners and workers have understood for decades.

Today's Hotelier: In Case You Missed It
Fact:  Sixty percent to 70 percent of property tax assessments are incorrect. Chances are yours are too.
Why:  A tax assessor’s job is obtaining tax funds, not accuracy. They seldom review property in detail. Assessors really don’t know what your hotel is worth. They use an average value based on other property sales. Assessors are not appraisers. They lack the skills and time to value your hotel accurately.
Occupancy sensors in rooms, CFL and LED lighting, and linen re-use programs are just a few of the ways properties in this industry are displaying their commitment to sustainability. Implementing a similar focus on sustainability in the laundry room can deliver equally significant savings. The trick is identifying where to focus your attention.
Today’s Hotelier recently spoke with Diego Lowenstein, CEO of Lionstone Development, about the evolution of luxury properties, how to appeal to female business and leisure travelers, and why it’s essential for hotels to customize the guest experience.
