AAHOA President & CEO, Laura Lee Blake, was recently quoted in a Forbes article regarding the possible Choice/Wyndham merger.

Choice Hotels has launched an exchange offer to acquire Wyndham for $49.50 in cash and 0.324 shares of Choice common stock per Wyndham share, valuing the deal at approximately $86 per share. The proposed merger aims to create the largest budget hotel franchisor in North America. However, Wyndham's board remains skeptical, stating that the offer appears unchanged from previously rejected proposals.

An informal survey of AAHOA members revealed that nearly 80% of Choice and Wyndham franchisees anticipate a negative impact on their businesses. The exchange offer expires on March 8, 2024, pending regulatory approval, including a potential Federal Trade Commission (FTC) second-round review, which could extend the process to 18 months. Wyndham has advised shareholders to await the board's recommendation before taking any action, adding uncertainty to the outcome of this industry-shaping merger.

“Most of the media coverage has not paid any attention to the hotel owners, the franchisees, who will face the most significant changes,” said Laura Lee Blake, President & CEO of AAHOA, in the article. “We feel strongly that the merger of the two brands would reduce competition, especially in this economy, limited-service segment, and really to the detriment of the franchisee hotel owners.”

On December 6, 2023, The Hill released its Top Lobbyists 2023 list, and included on the list is President & CEO of AAHOA, Laura Lee Blake, along with Neal Patel of Patel Partners, a former White House Official.

In January, Capitol Hill opened its doors to lobbyists once again after pandemic restrictions were lifted. That means corporate lobbyists, hired guns, association leaders, and grassroots activists are back in full force, and these top lobbyists have had to navigate a divided Congress — and not just the traditional Republican and Democratic divisions.

“Thrilled and honored to share the exciting news that I've been included in The Hill's Top Lobbyist list alongside Neal Patel, Managing Partner of Patel Partners, and a league of impactful advocates!” Laura Lee said in a LinkedIn post. “This incredible recognition wouldn't have been possible without the support of our 20,000 AAHOA Members who passionately advocate at the nation's and state capitols. Neal and I are driven by our commitment to wholeheartedly serve AAHOA Members and ensure the hospitality industry thrives.”

AAHOA Advocacy in Action
The LA City Council read for the first time a revised ordinance that would require police permits for hotels. The ordinance also included other measures, such as a Voluntary Housing Program that would place unhoused individuals in vacant guest rooms at hotels on a volunteer basis. AAHOA sent a letter to the LA City Council, as well as a memo strongly supporting the proposal for the Voluntary Housing Program (for unhoused individuals), expressing concerns regarding the police permitting sections, and asking the City Council to send this section back to the Committee.

At the council meeting on Tuesday, November 29, AAHOA Members made their stance clear. Despite Councilmember John Lee's motion to bifurcate the ordinance, specifically by sending the permitting section back to the committee, this effort was met with objection by the Council President. Nevertheless, Councilman Lee acknowledged and commended AAHOA’s tireless efforts in protecting hotel owners, a significant number of whom are minority and immigrant hoteliers.

“We feel we have the Councilmember's support. The LA City Council definitely heard and saw us,” Rachel Stone, AAHOA Director of State Government Affairs Western Region, shared.

Truist Securities reports, “Overall U.S. RevPAR was +3.3% y/y for the week ending 12/9/2023, per STR, above the prior week's result of -0.8%, and above the trailing 10-week average of +2.5%. Versus 2019, RevPAR was +17.0%, above the prior week’s result of +0.1%, and effectively in-line with the trailing 10-week average of +16.9%. As we expected, last week had better sequential results, driven by a higher mix of business and group travel than the prior two weeks which were more leisure-centric. Of the three customer segments, business and group are the relatively outperforming customer segments of late, especially group. Results, especially for luxury hotels, from two weeks ago were also negatively impacted by the timing of Art Basel in Miami whereas last week was helped (Miami RevPAR +67.0% y/y). Upscale RevPAR: +4.4% y/y and +10.1% vs. 2019; Upper Midscale RevPAR: +1.0% y/y and +13.8% vs. 2019.”
