The AAHOA North Pacific region recently hosted a noteworthy fundraiser in support of Congresswoman Barbara Lee, who represents the 12th Congressional District of California in Davis, CA. This event not only underscored the North Pacific region's commitment to the democratic process but also highlighted the hospitality industry's active role in shaping community and political dialogues.

The event began with a roundtable discussion between Congresswoman Lee, Treasurer Kamalesh (KP) Patel, Mid South Regional Director Harikrishna (HK) Patel, and North Pacific Regional Director Ankit Panchal. The conversation covered various industry concerns, including workforce reform and drive-by ADA lawsuits.

Afterward, Congresswoman Lee took the stage to address all attendees. She gave hoteliers more insight into her political background, the policies she’s actively championing, and her efforts on the campaign trail Senate in the upcoming election.

Concluding her address, she reiterated her support for AAHOA Members and recognized the significant contributions made by hoteliers in California and across the nation.

AAHOA President & CEO Laura Lee Blake and Director of State Government Affairs Western Division Rachel Stone were featured in Hotel Dive’s recent article on hotel accessibility.

The article delved into the upcoming Supreme Court case Acheson Hotels LLC v. Deborah Laufer. This case involves a woman with a disability who sued the Maine-based hotel group in 2020, alleging its websites weren’t up to standards set by the Americans With Disabilities Act.

Blake called Acheson Hotels LLC v. Deborah Laufer “a big case that we are watching on behalf of our members.” Meanwhile, Stone has been tracking other ADA-related lawsuits at hotels.

In California, Stone said, approximately 92% of all accessibility claims are filed by only five law firms, and of those claims, only 5% result in a legal judgment. Settlements, on the other hand, range from $5,000 to $25,000 on average.

“What we’re seeing is law firms targeting these small businesses or spa hotels for financial gain,” she said.

“Many of these businesses are owned by immigrants,” Stone added. “They speak English as a second language, or they may not have the resources to fight litigation. So what ends up happening is they end up settling these lawsuits — and some of these are millions of dollars — out of fear.”

AAHOA Advocacy in Action
The federal government will increase per diem rates for lodging by a minimum of $9 a night in Fiscal Year 2024, a win for hoteliers.

The higher rates reflect AAHOA's advocacy efforts to increase the per diem rate for government employee work-related travel.

The General Services Administration (GSA) announced that the standard lodging rate in the continental United States will increase from $98 to $107. Rates are higher in many metropolitan areas and during peak demand seasons. Details can be found here.

Additionally, as many private-sector and nonprofit organizations index their own travel reimbursements against the GSA rates, we expect these higher rates to benefit hoteliers broadly.

AAHOA appreciates this recognition toward ensuring hotels are fairly compensated for the important role our industry plays in America's economy.

"It's an ideal fit. Women have always traditionally been the home-keepers; hotels are home away from home for many of our guests. As a woman hotelier, we level up at something that is very much already a part of who we are."

"As a newcomer to the Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) Upper Midwest Regional Conference & Trade Show, I felt deeply honored and exhilarated by the warm reception extended to me by its leadership Bharat Patel. AAHOA stands as the world's largest association for hotel owners, with its members boasting ownership of more than half of all hotels in the United States. Given my current pursuit in the realm of hotel ownership, I find immense value in having an association like AAHOA that provides guidance and support along this intricate journey. #AAHOA"

AAHOA Education

Today, August 24, from 2:00-2:45 PM EDT, AAHOA is hosting its second webinar in two weeks, titled, "Is Music in Your Hotel Putting You at Legal Risk?"

Studies show music enhances your business by making customers happier. But, it’s important to know that under federal copyright law, when copyrighted music is performed in any establishment, permission must be granted from the copyright owner. In most cases, that permission comes in the form of a music license.

In this webinar, you will hear from Daniel Spears from BMI who will help you navigate the complex world of music licensing. BMI represents more than 1.3 million songwriters, composers, and publishers with over 20.6 million musical works.

You'll learn about:
  • Copyright law and the performing rights organizations that represent songwriters
  • Your legal obligations when it comes to lobby, public spaces, and restaurant music
  • Permissibility of unlicensed television audio in the breakfast or other common areas, including fitness centers

Don't put yourself at risk when delighting your guests with the sound of music!
