AAHOA President & CEO Laura Lee Blake sat down with No Vacancy Podcast Host Glenn Haussman at AAHOACON23 in Los Angeles, CA, to discuss the biggest takeaways from the nation’s largest event exclusively for hotel owners.

“We have set record levels with our trade show. We actually sold out. It's not just that we had a few extra booths in the corner, and we repurposed them for something else,” Blake said. “We actually sold out. Almost 90,000 square feet tradeshow floor.”

“Thank you, Glenn Haussman, for your amazing work and support of AAHOA over all of these years, including hosting your podcast in the middle of #AAHOACON23!” Blake shared on LinkedIn. “We also loved having you as an incredible tech pitch judge at our annual tech pitch competition.”

On National Travel and Tourism Week, which is from May 7 to 13, AAHOA is proud to celebrate all that travel does for America’s hotel owners now, and all that it will contribute in the future.

NTTW is an annual tradition to celebrate the U.S. travel community and travel’s essential role in stimulating economic growth, cultivating vibrant communities, creating quality job opportunities, inspiring new businesses, and elevating the quality of life for Americans every day.

Travel is at the heart of the hotel industry. In fact, the travel industry drives 3.5 million guests to stay at AAHOA Member-owned hotels each night, filling all 30 NFL stadiums and all 31 MLB stadiums combined. Additionally, travel generates revenue, allowing AAHOA Members to contribute $368.4 billion to the U.S. GDP and make $24 billion in capital investments.

This year also marks the 40th anniversary of NTTW. Check out the National Travel and Tourism Week 2023 video and get excited to join thousands of travel, tourism, and hospitality professionals to celebrate the value travel holds for the economy, communities, and hotel businesses.

AAHOA Advocacy in Action
AAHOA is continuously striving to stay the foremost advocate and resource for America's hotel owners. Through the educational resources we provide our members, specifically those which focus on Franchise Advocacy, hotel owners continue to gain a better understanding of their rights as Franchisees. Along with the iconic 12 Points of Fair Franchising, AAHOA's best-practice approach to designing, developing, and implementing best-in-class, mutually beneficial franchise systems, AAHOA is introducing the 4 Core Pillars of Franchise Advocacy.

The 4 Core Pillars:
  1. Mandated Vendors: Brands should not mandate specific vendors when there are multiple vendors selling goods of comparable quality at comparable prices.
  2. Rebates: Brands should disclose all vendor "rebates," which can also be called "discounts," "refunds," or "allowances," and should be returned to Franchisees through appropriate accounts.
  3. Loyalty Programs: Brands should reasonably compensate Franchisees when the brand sells loyalty points for cash and then allows travelers to stay at hotels owned by Franchisees.
  4. New Fees: Brands should not unilaterally or arbitrarily impose new fees on Franchisees that were not disclosed in the official Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) without the approval of the Franchisees or a properly elected Franchise Advisory Council (FAC).

So, I think we are the number one AAHOA Member and we're just so proud to be here and to help our community through their legal issues.

AAHOA Education

On Tuesday, May 2, The American Association of Franchisees and Dealers (AAFD), the Coalition of Franchise Associations (CFA), and AAHOA jointly hosted a call for webinar attendees to listen in on a discussion with the Federal Trade Commission.

AAHOA had the privilege of being joined by the Honorable Lina Khan, Chair at the Federal Trade Commission, and the Honorable Rebecca Kelly Slaughter, Commissioner at the Federal Trade Commission. Additionally, each of the three hosting organizations' leadership made statements and asked questions of our guests.

Nearly 1,000 registrants tuned in. It was an excellent opportunity for current and future franchisees to hear from FTC leadership on how they have focused attention on using the FTC’s authority to improve oversight and education within the franchise industry.

Stay tuned for more exciting events, virtual and live, from AAHOA Education.

Truist Securities reports, “Overall U.S. RevPAR was +5.6% y/y for the week ending 4/29/2023, per STR, down from the prior week's result of +6.6%, and below the trailing 10-week average of +7.4%. Vs. 2019, RevPAR was +12.0%, down from the prior week’s result of +17.4%, and below the trailing 10-week average of +12.9%. We note that comps have re-normalized following the Easter Holiday shift, as last week was a clean comp. Y/y RevPAR gains last week were driven by strong Group customer performance, up 10.9% y/y, which subsequently drove Upper Upscale segment outperformance (+10.9% y/y). Despite the y/y strong performance, we believe there is still continued opportunity for Group strength going forward as Group occupancy vs. 2019 was still down 9.1%. Upscale RevPAR: +9.5% y/y and +7.2% vs. 2019; Upper Midscale RevPAR: +5.4% y/y and +12.2% vs. 2019.”
