The stench of tariffs: As you read today’s newsletter, trade developments continue to unfold with unprecedented speed in D.C. and around the globe. In fact, a leaked draft of a Trump administration bill would declare American’s abandonment of fundamental World Trade Organization (WTO) rules – a policy that would be deemed the "U.S. FART Act" (United States Fair and Reciprocal Tariff Act). See the full story above under Trade. AAFA has been fighting to protect fair and open trade around the globe, on behalf of members, and will not be slowing down. On June 29, AAFA submitted a request to provide additional testimony for the second tranche of the Administration's proposed tariffs on U.S. imports from China for the July 2018 hearings.

AAFA urges rewrite of California port drayage trucker legislation: On June 28, AAFA sent a letter to California Senator Ricardo Lara expressing serious concerns with SB 1402, Senator Lara’s port drayage trucker legislation. If approved, as currently written, the legislation would create immense uncertainty for the industry, putting thousands of well-paying California apparel and footwear, port, and distribution center jobs at risk.

Concerns in Nicaragua: On June 29, AAFA joined with several other organizations and brands in a letter to President Daniel Ortega Saavedra expressing concerns with the ongoing political and social crisis in Nicaragua.
