Pallets (modern goods transportation infrastructure), also known as skids, are flat transportation structures that provide support to goods in a stable manner while transported from one place to another. Pallets are designed to access support to the forklift, pallet jack, front loader or other jacking device at the time of transporting. The majority of pallets are made of wood (hardwood or softwood) - approximately 80 percent. Other materials used to manufacture pallets include plastic (high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC)), metal (carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminum), corrugated paper (corrugated, honeycomb, solid fibreboard and moulded pulp paper) and composite wood ((plywood, OSB, particleboard and LVL)).

A recent survey found that 69 percent of American businesses use cloud storage to some extent and that 40 percent of all enterprise data is now cloud-based. Motor carriers are no exception. The growing use of GPS, electronic logging devices, onboard cameras and other telematics technology is generating an ever-growing stream of data, much of which ends up in cloud storage. The following article will review some important considerations and potential pitfalls presented by this trend.

The world’s largest container shipping operator says the industry needs more consolidation. Maersk Line CEO Soren Skou tells the WSJ’s Costas Paris that shipping volume this year is running far behind what Maersk and other carriers anticipated and that capacity growth is likely to outpace demand for some time. Maersk has been a leader in moving toward the Triple-Es—ships that move more than 18,000 containers—and the carrier and other shipping lines have struck alliances to spread the cost of operating the ships around. The tie-ups are helping, but Skou says faltering demand won’t support more industry investment, particularly in information technology. Consolidation, he says, would allow carriers to share the big investment while driving down operating costs, allowing them to spread the savings to customers with lower freight rates.

The national average price of diesel fuel increased 1.6 cents this week, driven by larger jumps in three regions. The increase is a reversal of a three-week decline, but the average remains under the $2.50 mark. The average diesel price for the week ending Oct. 5, 2015, was $2.492, according to the Energy Information Administration. That’s a $1.241 savings over the same period last year. The weekly increase is not reflective of price changes through most of the country. Three regions, the Midwest, the West Coast and the Rocky Mountains, pushed the average up despite lower prices in other areas. The largest jump was in the Midwest, where drivers are now paying 5.5 cents more than last week. In the Central Atlantic region, however, prices are down 1.6 cents.

Nestlé Waters North America Inc. (Stamford, CT) is expanding its use of recycled content in its Arrowhead water brand for many of its most popular sized bottles by the end of 2016. This will increase Arrowhead's use of recycled content by 38 percent and will ensure that most of its bottle sizes contain up to 50 percent recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET).

"Arrowhead has been part of California history for more than a century. We are continuously evolving our products to have the smallest environmental footprint possible. Thanks to California’s strong commitment to recycling, there is high quality rPET available enabling us to increase our use of recycled material," said Tim Brown, CEO and president of Nestlé Waters North America, which operates the Arrowhead brand.

The announcement is an extension of the brand’s ongoing commiment to support recycling efforts in California. While most plastic bottles are made out of material called polyethylene terephthalate (PET), Arrowhead has focused on introducing bottles made from rPET and began using it in its ½-liter bottles three years ago.
