Juliann Sum is the new chief of the California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA). She was unanimously confirmed on June 11 by the Senate Rules Committee after being appointed by Governor Jerry Brown last December. She has been serving as acting chief since 2013.

Based on a review of the scientific evidence, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on June 16 finalized its determination that partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs), the primary dietary source of artificial trans fat in processed foods, are not "generally recognized as safe" or GRAS for use in human food. Food manufacturers will have three years to remove PHOs from products.
