I was intrigued by a footnote in a current article and followed it to this study published a couple of years ago. The authors surveyed nine medical practice administrators who had experience with the medical home model. They developed the following proposed staffing ratios for a patient-centered medical home.

COMPENSATION

More than 19,500 physicians in 25 specialties responded to this year's Medscape compensation survey and described their compensation, number of hours worked, practice changes resulting from health care reform and how they have adapted to the new health care environment.

Compensation is a hot topic in health care, with everyone from doctors to nurses working to make sure that they receive fair return for their work. This is even an issue for those at the top of the corporate ladder, as hospitals and health systems look to make changes to their executive compensation structure in order to be more appealing leaders.

GENERAL HR

Alissa Parr, PhD, Select International

Consider the following questions: If you were asked to unload a 747 full of jellybeans, what would you do? If you woke up and had 2,000 unread emails and could only answer 300 of them, how would you choose which ones to answer? How many gas stations are there in America?

The new machine that could one day replace anesthesiologists sat quietly next to a hospital gurney occupied by Nancy Youssef-Ringle. She was nervous. In a few minutes, a machine – not a doctor – would sedate the 59-year-old for a colon cancer screening called a colonoscopy.

My dad had a health scare recently, and at a doctor’s appointment to receive some important test results, my mom wanted to record audio of the visit on her smartphone. "If he had gotten some terrible diagnosis, I wanted to be able to share that discussion with you and your sister," Mom told me later.

Achieving higher value, cost-conscious care that eliminates waste and optimizes quality is a crucial priority. Recent professional and policy initiatives aiming to spur individual physicians to achieve that priority include the American Board of Internal Medicine’s Choosing Wisely Campaign, the High Value Cost-Conscious Care Initiative from the American College of Physicians, and new content in the American Medical Association Code of Medical Ethics.

MANAGEMENT & LEADERSHIP

The first obligation of a leader is, of course, to lead. But leading always begs a question – toward where? The quality of leadership ultimately must be judged by the degree to which followers arrive at an intended place that's worth going to.
