WORKFORCE

By Zack Budryk, FierceHealthcare

Hospitals must do more to protect nursing staff, who suffer more workplace musculoskeletal injuries than those in intensely physical industries such as construction, due in large part to the strain of lifting patients, NPR reports.

Within a medical setting, nurses play a primary role in providing that care. However, within this background of expected kindness lies a dirty secret: bullying.

Unionized nurses and their supporters cite a clear correlation between staffing ratios and quality of care and are calling for new laws. But hospital associations say there's a lack of conclusive data.

COMPENSATION

By Johanna Epstein, InsuranceNewsNet.com

Health care reform is changing the payment landscape, particularly for physicians. In response to these changes, health care organizations are compelled to adapt their physician compensation models to reflect a focus not only on volume, but also on quality, outcomes and patient satisfaction. Some progressive organizations are planning now for the impact emerging payment changes will have on physician payment and retention as well as on the organization's long-term financial viability.

As he took me through an interactive map on his computer screen, Oakland physician Nate Gross showed me what a neurosurgeon in my area might expect to make. Scrolling his cursor over the D.C. suburb of Montgomery County, Maryland, a number appeared: $580,000. I knew that, vaguely, but I did gasp.

As medical providers, you know how rapidly germs can spread and cause illness. You know the sneaky ways they tag along on even the uninfected to ensure proliferation of disease—as well as simple but effective strategies for keeping them contained. But these pathogens aren't the only contagion in your office. The equally grave conditions of burnout and pessimism, as FiercePracticeManagement reported last week, have now consumed nearly half of the U.S. physician workforce.

PHYSICIANS

The Tampa Tribune via Associated Press

Bob Jeske grew up on a farm and always wanted to practice rural medicine. But it didn't hurt that a state program covered some of his student loans to do just that. State lawmakers in both parties want to expand the program that takes a big chunk out of Jeske's $182,500 in medical school debt. Their plan is one of many approaches to solving a looming shortage of doctors and other health care professionals expected to hit hardest in rural Minnesota.

A compilation of industry insight and feedback can guide your hospital to engage with its community and stay abreast of governance changes. These are tumultuous times for hospitals. As society demands change in how health care is delivered, paid for and governed, health systems not only are potentially strapped for cash, they’re also continually forced to innovate.

By Paul Barr, Hospitals & Health Networks

Pivotal to the titanic shift to a value-driven business model is understanding how the health care consumer acts. Yes, I said "consumer," not "patient." As we've reported in the past, patients are likely to start acting more like consumers in the coming years, and hospital executives need to be ready. What does this mean? Well, think about the trends that are giving patients more say in how they get and pay for care—price and quality transparency, high-deductible insurance and mHealth, for starters. And, the consumer-patient will demand high-quality service.

By Bill Santamour, Hospitals & Health Networks

"No such thing as work-life balance? Now you tell me!" That was a typical reaction to my recent column about Stewart Friedman’s book, Leading the Life You Want: Skills for Integrating Work and Life. In the book, Friedman argues that trying to balance the personal and professional is an exercise in frustration. The goal should be to understand the "four domains" of your life—work, home, community and the "private realm" of mind, body and spirit—and accept that you can never perfectly balance all four in terms of time and energy. Instead, look for how each can inform and enrich the other.
