The American Hospital Association (AHA) disputed a New York Times analysis of health care executive compensation in a letter to the editor published this week. The NYT's analysis found that although physicians are the most highly trained professionals in the health care field, surgeons earn an average of $306,000 and general doctors make $185,000, far less than the $386,000 average for hospital chief executive officers.

Discussions I've had recently with health care leaders seeking advice on raising HCAHPS scores have caused me to reflect. Are we looking too closely at short-term goals, such as improving these scores? Might our time and energy be better spent on intentionally creating high-performing cultures – cultures in which all patient satisfaction measures improve simply as a byproduct of seeking excellence?
