Nurse staffing and education levels both affect outcomes, according to research backed by a division of the National Institutes of Health and a European Union organization. The researchers concluded that each additional surgery patient in a nurse's workload increased the likelihood that a patient would die within 30 days of admission by 7 percent, according to the NIH's National Institute of Nursing Research.

Administrative expenses are an ongoing burden for the health care industry. The reason, many experts note, is that too many dollars are still tied up in health care's largest cost center: staffing. The good news, however, is that many hospitals are learning how to maximize resource utilization and reduce expenses by eliminating manual, time-consuming workforce management processes.

As physician reimbursement shifts from a fee-for-service model to a value-based structure, expect to see changes in how compensation plans are drafted. Quality and patient satisfaction benchmarks are not only affecting physician reimbursement levels, but they are also a growing component of physician compensation formulas, multiple and independent studies show.

Your human resource team has probably outlined the duties, skill sets and expectations for each job in your organization. They may have even included things like: take initiative, be a team player, effective communicator. But, more than likely, there is no matching score card available for managers on those ambiguous, but important soft skills.

Technology isn't enough to improve health care. Doctors must be able to distinguish between valuable data and information overload. As a doctor, I know the value of information, but I also know what's worse than not enough information: misinformation or too much information. In this information age, we seem to have plenty of both.

Last month when ACHE released its annual statistics on CEO turnover, everyone took note. The rate for hospital administration has been fluctuating but generally creeping upward for several years, but 20 percent last year felt like a tipping point. Based on the notices I see daily, I was surprised – surprised the rate wasn't higher. The obvious suspects were called out to explain the hike: CEO retirements, fewer CEO slots due to reconfigured system management structures, and last, but certainly not the least, changes in the health care system.
