Four generations are currently working in the U.S. – the first time this has occurred in our nation's modern history, according to the American Hospital Association. Traditionalists (born before 1945), baby boomers (1946-1964), generation X'ers (1965-1980), and millennials are all working side by side, though some groups are smaller than others (5 percent or less of traditionalists are in the workforce today, for example).

Employment at the nation's hospitals fell by 0.03 percent in February to a seasonally adjusted 4,787,900 people, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. That's 1,200 fewer people than in January and 2,800 fewer than a year ago.

The turnover rate for hospital CEOs is the highest reported since the American College of Healthcare Executives began tracking these rates back in 1981, according to a new report from ACHE. In 2013, the turnover rate was 20 percent, while the annual rate has fluctuated between 14 percent and 18 percent in the previous decade.

Since 2008 when the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services first implemented the HCAHPS survey for U.S. hospitals, the scores from these surveys have become increasingly more important to hospital executives as a measure of quality.
