Returning the Chestnut to Prominence in West Virginia
Research hopes to restore the once prevalent and still desired tree species in West Virginia LEWISBURG, W.V. – Plum Creek [has] announced that it has planted more than 100 blight-resistant chestnut seedlings in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, to help restore the once prominent tree species in the state. The planting, done December 3 with the assistance of faculty and students from both the Dabney Lancaster College forestry department and James Monroe High School Junior ROTC, is part of a multi-year effort underway to help West Virginia forests recover from a blight fungus that destroyed nearly all of the chestnut trees in the state.
