Industry News

Sutton Home Hardware (Sutton, ON) Dealer-Owners, Dave and Anita Haynes accepted the Best Hardware Store award for their commitment to growth and dedication to helping customers in their community. Led by a philosophy of going above and beyond for their customers, Sutton Home Hardware has built a large and strong customer base.

Gananoque Home Hardware Building Centre (Gananoque, ON) was awarded the Best Building Supply Centre Over 25,000 Square Feet award. Led by Dealer-Owners Ken and Linda O’Connor, the store’s repeated strong sales are the result of a bold expansion strategy they undertook during a challenging economic climate in their small community. Through the expansion, the store has become the largest retailer in town – not to mention the largest Home Hardware location in the country - and has been instrumental in preserving the community’s downtown core.

"On behalf of the Dealer-Owners at close to 1,100 Home Hardware stores across Canada, I’d like to congratulate Sutton Home Hardware and Gananoque Home Hardware Building Centre on receiving such high honours from the industry. These stores are great representatives of the Home brand."
- Terry Davis, CEO, Home Hardware Stores Limited

Sutton Home Hardware (Steve Peasgood – Manager, Dave & Anita Haynes – Dealer-Owners) and Gananoque Home Hardware (Laura Ware – General Manager, Kenzie O’Conner) accept top honours at 2014 Hardlines Outstanding Retailer Awards alongside Terry Davis, CEO Home Hardware Stores Limited.

The Hardlines Conference will welcome some fresh voices on the podium this year. A panel will feature young retailers and vendors from across Canada who will give their take on the needs and drives of the new generation of the home improvement industry.

Meet the panel:

Kim Ytsma, Co-Owner, Alliston Home Hardware. Kim began working in her dad’s store when she was just 10 years old.  Today, she directly oversees the 15 service desk staff and ensures consumers get the assistance they need. Kim splits her day between the customer service desk, her own office, and working the floor.

Marc-André Dignard, Project Manager – Retail, RONA inc. Marc-André joined RONA in 2009 as a senior internal auditor. A Chartered Professional Accountant by profession, he became Project Director, Operations in 2012 and is responsible for SG&A, cost reduction, standardizing retail operations, closing non-performing stores, and many other projects.

Joel Seibert, General Manager, Mountain View Building Materials
. Joel is a third-generation lumberman.  While only 32 years old, he has been exposed to the building supply industry his entire life. He believes the future of the retail lumber industry depends on retailers’ ability to communicate with customers, suppliers, and environmental groups to ensure innovation, growth, and sustainability for many generations to come.

Eric Palmer, Canadian Sales Operation Manager, JELD-WEN Windows & Doors. Eric graduated from the University of Manitoba with an Honors Degree from the Asper School of Business, and joined JELD-WEN, where he has worked his way through Management and Communication training.

Congratulations to Joel Seibert and Eric Palmer for winning their Conference Passes and Young Leader Panel seats through the WRLA & NHRA "NexGEN Hardlines Contest"   Go NexGEN!

The panel will be moderated by Sherri Amos, Education & Communication Specialist at Home Hardware Stores Ltd. With voices from all levels of the industry, this group of young leaders will challenge your thinking on where our industry is going in the 21st century.

Four Tips for Selling Storage and Organization

Your customers are always searching for ways to organize their lives and possessions better. Whether simply seeking to decrease clutter or organize items in the "junk" drawer, space is at a premium for most home owners. Use the following tips to make the most of your storage sales:

  • Display assembled products. Many customizable storage systems are easy to install, but may not seem that way to a customer when he or she is staring at the box. Dedicate a space to show a sample of that system installed with easy instructions on how customers can design and install it themselves. If you have limited space, use large photos showing installed closet systems from vendors—or from customers who have tried the product already.
  • Keep current on style. Instead of white wire racking, you could try displaying brushed steel, chrome or colour, which are popular finishes for shelving units today. Some people might even want cabinets in closets and in the garage, so make sure you can accommodate those requests. To get more ideas for how customers might want to use their storage space, visit department stores and specialty storage retailers.
  • Sell the basics. Storage solutions are in every part of the house, including food storage, organizers for the office, modular units for apartments and college  dorms, and baskets for the laundry room. When you offer the latest and most creative designs, your category will stand out from your competitors’.
  • Use special orders. Use your storage vendor’s special order capabilities to cut down on inventory, give your customers more options and fetch higher margins. Train all employees on the ordering process so it’s easy and fast for customers.
