It was announced today that the Qualico Head Office building in Winnipeg has been awarded LEED® Silver certification. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an internationally recognized certification program and benchmark for the design and construction of green buildings.

"Achieving LEED silver status places Qualico on the leading edge of environmental design and construction practices in North American. It also demonstrates our commitment to the environment and long term sustainable development," said John Daniels, Vice President, Qualico Winnipeg. "Not only have we reduced the building's impact on the environment, but reduced operating costs and improved the quality of the environment for our employees.

"Some of the features of the building include energy efficient windows, a geothermal mechanical system, green roofs, a building management system and water efficient plumbing fixtures" said Brian Cornelsen, Qualico Project Manager. "A significant challenge was to ensure the building operated as intended and part of the LEED program was to complete comprehensive commissioning of all building systems."

The Qualico head office is a 3-storey, 65,000 square foot building located in Winnipeg Manitoba. The building also incorporates over 6,300 square feet of outdoor garden and rooftop patio and is home to over 150 employees.

Some green facts about the Qualico head office include:
- Water usage has been reduced by 45%
- Energy cost savings of 59% from a conventional building
- 80% of the construction waste was diverted from the landfill
- 13.5% of materials used contained recycled content
- 14.8% of construction materials were regionally manufactured and extracted
- A minimum of 75% of the furniture used in the building is certified through Green guard or equivalent.

Qualico is a fully integrated real estate development company with corporate head offices in Winnipeg and operations in Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Regina and Winnipeg. It is one of the largest real estate development operations in Western Canada.

TASK TOOLS® announces the launch of three new Power Tool Accessory programs: Impact Driver Accessories, Robertson® Decking Bits and TASK Signature® Spade Bits. "We have completed a lot of R & D in the last year, and 2012 is going to be a big year for product launches at Task Tools", says TASK President and C.E.O., Craig Caplan. Independent laboratory tests have proven that TASK Impact Driver Bits outlast and outperform competing brands and the company is willing to stand behind this with a money back guarantee.

Premium Quality Impact Bits with Superior Performance
TASK® Impact Driver Accessories are designed with the most demanding professional users in mind. They offer several unique and patented features such as the Autolocking Quick Change Extensions that securely grip any ¼" hex shank, even 1" bits without quick change ends. By using a proprietary metallurgy and patented geometry, the Phillips and Robertson® Impact Driver Bits achieve unrivalled durability that is laboratory proven. Driver bits are colour-coded and all impact accessories are marked with bold IMPACT labels to make selection quick and easy. The full Impact line includes Driver Bits, Magnetic Nut Setters, Socket Adapters, Magnetic Bit Holder and the Autolocking Quick Change Extensions. Impact Bits can be purchased in the unique 10-pack carabiner clips or individually in bulk and carded formats.

TASK Signature® Spade Bits are 10 Times Faster than Standard Wood Boring Bits
TASK Signature® Spade Bits have many innovative design features making them the fastest spade bits on the market. The full cone threaded tip pulls through wood with minimum effort and vibration while the spur and reamer tips below allow for a clean exit hole with minimal breakout. The contoured paddle design enables fast chip clearance for maximum speed. TASK Signature® Spade Bits also feature quick-change 1/4" hex shanks that prevent chuck slippage and the bits are heat treated for durability. A full program including 4" stubby, 6" standard, 16" extended and extensions measuring 6" and 12" are available. A video demonstrating the speed of the new bits is available on the TASK TOOLS® You Tube channel:

Decking Bits
TASK® is now offering Robertson® Decking Bits that feature a 3° tapered tip design for a perfect fit with coated deck and fence screws. As with all genuine Robertson® Bits, the 2-piece, industrial grade, hardened tool steel tips ensure the durability of the bit in heavy duty work environments. Tips are manufactured from hardened tool steel tips in Canada for quality assurance. Robertson® Decking Bits are available in 10-pack carabiner clips or individually.

The Bank of Canada today announced that it is maintaining its target for the overnight rate at 1 per cent. The Bank Rate is correspondingly 1 1/4 per cent and the deposit rate is 3/4 per cent.

The outlook for global economic growth has weakened in recent weeks. Some of the risks around the European crisis are materializing and risks remain skewed to the downside. This is leading to a sharp deterioration in global financial conditions. While the U.S. economy continues to expand at a modest pace, economic activity in emerging-market economies is slowing a bit faster and a bit more broadly than had been expected. More modest global momentum and heightened financial risk aversion have reduced commodity prices.

Although economic growth in Canada was slightly slower than expected in the first quarter, underlying economic momentum appears largely consistent with expectations. However, the composition of growth is less balanced. In particular, housing activity has been stronger than expected, and households continue to add to their debt burden in an environment of modest income growth. Despite external events, business and household confidence has held up and domestic financial conditions remain very stimulative. The contribution of government spending to growth is expected to be quite modest over the projection horizon, in line with recent federal and provincial budgets. The recovery in net exports is likely to remain weak in light of modest external demand and ongoing competitiveness challenges, including the persistent strength of the Canadian dollar.

The Canadian economy continues to operate with a small degree of excess capacity. Total CPI inflation is expected to fall below 2 per cent in the short term, as a result of lower gasoline prices, while core inflation is expected to remain around 2 per cent.

Reflecting all of these factors, the Bank has decided to maintain the target for the overnight rate at 1 per cent. To the extent that the economic expansion continues and the current excess supply in the economy is gradually absorbed, some modest withdrawal of the present considerable monetary policy stimulus may become appropriate, consistent with achieving the 2 per cent inflation target over the medium term. The timing and degree of any such withdrawal will be weighed carefully against domestic and global economic developments.
