Industry News

A young construction worker was killed when she was hit by a car; a young worker fell to his death through a store's drop ceiling; and another suffered a punctured lung, spinal fracture and concussion when he collided with the tow line lifting device while testing a run at a ski hill. In 2009, 35 young people between the ages of 15 and 24 died in Canada from work-related injuries or illnesses. Another 33,836 were injured severely enough to be granted workers compensation.

Young and new workers are particularly vulnerable to workplace injury or illness, many of the injuries occurring in the first month on the job. The reasons vary. These workers may not fully understand, or be confident about their rights as workers. Eager to impress and accept new challenges, new workers may readily accept risky assignments for which they are not fully prepared and be reluctant to ask questions. They often lack training and experience and may not understand the hazards in the workplace.

The bottom line: anyone who lacks experience and training is at particular risk of getting injured.

What employers can do
Ensuring the safety and health of young and new workers starts with having a good health and safety management system that protects everyone. As an employer you must ensure that safety measures and procedures are in place and followed, to protect all workers. You must ensure equipment, materials and protective devices comply with health and safety laws, and that young workers are trained on - and use - these protective measures at all times.

More than 100 Dealers took part in annual trip

St. Jacobs, Ontario, May 4, 2011 – Recently, more than 100 Home Hardware Dealer Owners and 20 Home Hardware vendors returned from Home Hardware’s Lumber and Building Materials Convention in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The yearly trip is one week in duration and brings together Home Dealers and vendors from across Canada to volunteer their time and help build much needed schools for youth in various areas of Mexico.

"I’d like to extend a thank you to all of the Home Dealers and vendors who contributed not only their time and effort but also their hearts to this great project," said Paul Straus, President and CEO, Home Hardware Stores Limited. "This yearly volunteer trip proves Home’s commitment to community and its charitable spirit is always hard at work – be it in our own communities’ right here in Canada or in other communities in need around the world."

Over the course of a week the team was hard at work building and outfitting Jardin de Ninos in Puerto Vallarta. The team helped construct washrooms and a new office for the teachers, and planted trees along the exterior of the school to provide the students some much needed shade and help prevent heat exhaustion from the hot sun.

"Over the course of the week it was amazing to see the school develop and our efforts pay off," said Bruce White, Vice President, Marketing, LBM. "These school build projects are a tangible way we can put to use the construction expertise of Home Dealers and vendors to help make a meaningful, concrete impact for these school children. We’re already looking forward to next year’s trip."

Beyond the time commitment of the volunteers, much of the materials and products used for the project were donated by the vendors. And to ensure the student’s are ready to start learning on day one in their new building, Home Dealers also donated school supplies.
