Retailers, do you have a secret weapon? Do you know how your customers are treated when you are not there?

If you said no to both questions above, enroll in the WRLA Mystery Shopper Program and be in the know. The WRLA has enlisted a top Western Canadian researcher that will schedule your company to be shopped by an underground agent.

Shops will be scheduled twice a year; once in the spring and once in the fall, or once a quarter. Fax the below form to the WRLA office to get onboard for the first spring shop.

Industry News

Ken Jenkins, President of Castle Building Centres Group Ltd., is pleased to welcome 5 new Retail, Commercial and Specialty members to an expanding network of successful independent dealers:

True Value - Neepawa, Manitoba - Castle

Darryl and Michelle Gerrard are expanding their very successful Neepawa True Value in Manitoba to include lumber and building materials. The Gerrards have operated their True Value Hardware location for the past seven years and the addition of the Castle program will further strengthen their ability to serve Neepawa and surrounding area.

Canadian Trade International - Saskatoon, Saskatchewan - Castle

CTI of Saskatoon, SK, has supplied and serviced a unique and growing marketplace for the past three years. After recently completing a new retail showroom, CTI has joined Castle to add hardware and building material products to offer a complete program to their customers. The addition of CTI underscores the growing dominance of Castle in the Saskatchewan market.

Broadway Drywall Distribution - Williams Lake, British Columbia - CBS

Broadway Drywall Distribution is a new business that is situated in Williams Lake, BC, and will specialize in the supply and service of building material products to the commercial and residential construction industry. Their target market will include builders, contractors and applicators in the community of Williams Lake, as well as the surrounding area. Major product lines will include lumber, panel boards, engineered wood products, gypsum, insulation, steel and hardware.

Victoria Carpet Shoppe - Victoria, Newfoundland - Castle

Victoria Carpet Shoppe, in Victoria, Newfoundland, started in 1985 as an independent family-owned business retailing flooring, plumbing and electrical products. With the addition of a new showroom in 2008, they expanded into windows and doors. Looking to further expand their building materials offering, they chose to join Castle to give them access to a full product range at competitive costing while maintaining the ability to run their own business.

Maritime Truss Limited - Truro, Nova Scotia - Castle Specialty

Maritime Truss Limited, a family-owned business in Truro, Nova Scotia, has supplied prefabricated wood roof, floor trusses and LVL beams to the Atlantic Provinces for over 20 years. MTL felt, under the economic conditions of today, that it was important to diversify and broaden their product offering with related building material products and viewed becoming a member of Castle''s Speciality Division as the best vehicle to give them access to nationally-recognized vendors whom they could partner with to maximize their growth opportunities.

The largest Canadian distributor and retailer of hardware, renovation and gardening products officially unveiled its new RONA Sherwood Park store today. The opening of the 52,000-square-foot store, located at 301 Wye Road, represents a $16 million investment in Sherwood Park and provides 72 local jobs, 40 of which are new positions.

"The people in Sherwood Park have been wonderful supporters of RONA," said Robert Dutton, RONA President and CEO. "They keep coming back because of the excellent service the store team provides and the expertise they know they can count on. This new store is one of the new generation of RONA stores, and it includes a tremendous range of products, brighter atmosphere, friendlier and more efficient design as well as our everyday competitive prices.

The new RONA replaces an older store that was located on 222 Baseline Road in Sherwood Park. It is also twice the size of the former store, providing room for more products and services for our customers. The store builds on RONA's efforts as a responsible steward of the environment and it will be the first store in the RONA banner to apply to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification in Alberta. The new TOTEM store in Strathmore, AB, and the RONA in Saint-Georges, QC, have also applied for LEED certification. Furthermore, the Calgary homes featured on My RONA Home television show obtained LEED Canada for Homes Certification - awarded largely because they were able to incorporate numerous eco-responsible products.

"Strathcona County is a dynamic region, home to people living both in urban and rural lifestyles. These conditions are ideal for RONA's products and service offering," commented Mr.Dutton. "We are proud to replace an older store with our new format store that has applied for LEED certification. It proves our commitment to protecting the environment and our desire to do things right."

PowerHouse Building Solutions has added the GRACE line of building products, as the master distributor for GRACE in Western Canada. GRACE's flagship product, GRACE Ice & Water Shield, is expected to generate the most immediate interest among architects, building envelope engineers, and contractors; as it is widely known to be the best-performing, most user-friendly ice and water shield on the market.

Other GRACE products include synthetic roofing underlayments, Triflex and Triflex Xtreme, GRACE Vycor window flashing, deck protector, and full-wall membrane products; as well as Perm-A-Barrier roll-applied and spray-applied ''air and vapour barrier'' materials, and Bituthane below-grade waterproofing.

"The GRACE line truly complements our existing building envelope products. Up until this point, we have focused mainly on Typar Housewrap™ and our rainscreen materials, Driwall 10™, HomeSlicker 10™ and Sure Cavity 10™.  Now, we have the whole package. From roof to foundation, PowerHouse has the right products to keep Western Canadian homes and buildings dry and mold-free," says Ross Power, director of sales and product development.

It is with great pleasure that AFA Forest Products Inc. announces a key benchmark in the company's strategy and that a step of its long-term planning has recently been achieved.

Our Atlantic region, effective immediately, will operate under four individual division managers (please see Table 1 below), rather than a single divisional general manager. This realignment had been identified as one of several important initiatives, which will accelerate corporate growth, improve service, provide velocity to new national product programs and expedite future location expansion.

As of May 1st, 2010, Lighthouse Lumber Wholesalers, a division of AFA Forest Products Inc., will no longer exist. Effectively, the entire group, coast to coast, will operate under AFA Forest Products Inc., establishing a key component in the company history and solidifying our position as a premier wholesale distributor of building materials across Canada.

Table 1:
Division Manager Location Telephone #
Mr. Dwight Fitzmorris Dartmouth, NS 1.902.434.8200
Mr. John Ethelston Moncton, NB 1.506.857.9977
Mr. Lewis Short Mount Pearl, NL 1.709.368.6813
Mr. Jim Stewart Sydney, NS 1.902.562.5596

Over the next few months, AFA Forest Products Inc. will be in a position to announce more important milestones and accomplishments, so stay tuned!
