The 2017 November elections in Virginia brought unexpected results.  Governor-elect Ralph Northam won a solid victory and helped propel Lt. Governor-elect Justin Fairfax and re-elect Attorney General Mark Herring into all three state-wide offices.  What has surprised most is – which party will control the House of Delegates in 2018!  As of this writing ONE vote, just one - has made the difference on who will chair all the committees and control the flow of legislation in Virginia.

AGCVA has been busy working with newly elected officials providing information on the key issues impacting the commercial construction industry.  AGC will push for legislation that will not force GC’s into waiving mechanics liens prior to signing a contract.  Workforce solutions will be front and center since Governor-elect Ralph Northam made this a pillar of his campaign for election.  Protecting Virginia’s Historic Tax Credits will also be a focus area since the tax credit has been a target for elimination or reduction the recently.  We will provide regular updates as Session continues.

“70% of contractors surveyed said they are having difficulty filling craft positions”
Here are some of the questions that are addressed in the article:
• What are the some of the changes you have seen in the construction industry?
• What do you think is the reason for chronic labor shortage in the industry?
• Can you take us through some important findings of the national workforce survey?
• What do you think are the reasons for low uptake of technological solutions?
• What are the applications of BIM to construction?

Chris Head wants to invent a new type of school.  He wants to create a Governor’s School for career and technical education. Virginia has had Governor’s Schools for academically-gifted students since the 1970s, a creation of Gov. Linwood Holton’s administration, if you’re inclined to give credit.

Students at Western Albemarle High School recently built a fully functioning tiny house — a 276-square-foot home designed for an individual or a couple.

Kevin Matheny’s shop class at WAHS devoted a full year to building the tiny house. The AGCVA Piedmont District & AGCVA’s Virginia Construction Industry Educational Foundation each supported the project with a $3,000 grant. Many local building supply companies donated materials for the house, as well.

"Communication takes many forms which we've all been educated in...mostly...right?  From a young age we are taught how to read properly to understand the world around us.  We are taught how to write effectively so we can communicate our thoughts, too.  But how many of us have ever been given any training on how to effectively listen?
