The Department of Homeland Security has designated October of each year as National Cyber Security Awareness Month. This is an annual campaign to raise awareness about cybersecurity. We live in a world that is more connected than ever before. The Internet touches almost all aspects of everyone’s daily life, whether we realize it or not. National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) is designed to engage and educate public and private sector partners through events and initiatives to raise awareness about cybersecurity. It will also provide tools and resources needed to stay safe online, and increase the resiliency of the Nation in the event of a cyber incident. (source: DHS website)

Some of these statements may sound familiar if you’ve discussed your website with your staff members: "I’d love to update this page, but changes are hard to make and no one really has time right now." "I search for our utility on Google, and our website is the sixth listing to pull up." "Loading this page takes forever. I don’t know why." "We have a complaint from a customer with vision loss. They cannot pay their bill online." "Our customers say that often this page won’t load at all." Notice that none of these complaints are about the look of your website. The world’s most beautiful website can still suffer from all of these problems and provide a frustrating experience for both your customers and your staff.

At the 50th Annual Meeting the audience was asked if they found value in the daily news clip service. "Absolutely", "sure do", "I start my day reading the news clips TMEPA sends each morning", were common responses to the questions. Staff reviews hundreds of newspaper articles each day, 7 days a week, "clips" those we believe are of interest to TMEPA members and send them out, most days by 8:00 a.m. (Central). You can also see the current and past 6 days on our website. If you don't receive the clips and would like to, just send an email to any of the staff and we'll add you to the list (mvinson@tmepa.org, susans@tmepa.org or jelrod@tmepa.org). Click on the link below to see the articles for today and the last 6 days.

There’s a story told of Archimedes, famed Greek engineer, inventor, and astronomer, having a bath while agonizing over a perplexing question from King Hiero II regarding a newly forged crown and a suspicion that some silver may have been substituted for the gold by a crooked goldsmith. Archimedes pondered desperately over what seemed an impossible demand: finding a method for determining the authenticity of an irregularly shaped object without damaging its integrity. Suddenly, he arose in delirious excitement from his oblong shaped bathtub and, forgetting his robe, ran out of his home and into the street shouting, "Eureka!"

Legislative Updates
Last month the commission continued its study of the topic by listening to several presenters, including the Department of Economic and Community Development reporting on the results of their survey. Work on the study, which began in early summer of 2015, is scheduled to end late 2016 or early 2017, with a draft of the broadband study likely to be presented at TACIR’s next meeting, which is December 5-6.

Most utilities are well run with dedicated employees, who work in a culture of doing what is best for the utility and its customers. A new state requirement would help protect utilities from possible theft or fraud, which can even be committed by a employee that is trusted the most.
