TAHFM is pleased to host the 2014 Texas Energy Roundup, a statewide competition between hospital and medical offices to save energy and improve the utility budget bottom line. Any type of hospital or medical office building is eligible to compete, as long as the facility has been benchmarked in EPA’s ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager and submits complete energy use information for the 2013 calendar year (1/1/2013 – 12/31/2013) by July 31, 2014.
 
In case you can’t make it to this year’s conference on August 3 – 6, you can earn CEU credits and interact with top presenters online.

Please welcome Briseda (Bri) Hernandez to the TAHFM family as a summer intern for 2014. Bri is pursuing an undergraduate degree in architecture and a minor in facilities management and is employed by Memorial Hermann for her internship.   • Alonzo Gonzalez, of University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and a TAHFM board member, has received Senior member status from ASHE. He has earned the distinguished honor of being designated as a SASHE, joining an elite group of talented and experienced colleagues who are committed to advancing the profession. Alonzo will be recognized at an award presentation during the Opening Session of ASHE’s 51st Annual Conference & Technical Exhibition on August 4, 2014.
  • Rick Scivally, of Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Hurst-Euless-Bedford and a TAHFM board member, has received the Emerging Regional Leader Award (Region 7) from ASHE. This award recognizes some of ASHE’s most promising grassroots members for their outstanding leadership and contributions to the field of health care facility management. Rick will be honored along with all the award winners at a special presentation during the Opening Session of ASHE’s 51st Annual Conference & Technical Exhibition on August 4, 2014.

During the next 25 years, U.S. budget deficits are expected to rise and increase federal debt held by the public to the highest percentage in the country's history since just after World War II, according to the Congressional Budget Office's 2014 long-term budget outlook. The long-term outlook also includes projections concerning the federal government's spending on healthcare.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has developed "Safe Patient Handling: Preventing Musculoskeletal Disorders in Nursing Homes," a new brochure that addresses the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders among nursing home and residential care workers. "Musculoskeletal injuries are the single biggest worker injury in the healthcare sector," said Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health Dr. David Michaels.
