Hospitals in several states have slashed energy use, reducing operational costs and freeing up more resources for patient care. Several 2014 winners are part of Memorial Hermann. Winners include Memorial Hermann Heart and Vascular Institute-Southwest; Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital Medical Plaza 1; Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital, Medical Plaza 1, Medical Plaza 2 Medical Plaza 3; Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital; Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital; and TIRR Memorial Hermann.

The Open Payments system is again available for physicians and teaching hospitals to register, review and dispute financial payment information received from health care manufacturers, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced on August 15. "We strongly encourage physicians to review their records before the deadline and before the data are posted publically to identify any discrepancies," said CMS Deputy Administrator Shantanu Agrawal, M.D. The public website will be available Sept. 30.

Becker's Hospital Review highlights a variety of Medicare and commercial ACOs, the majority of which are led by hospitals or health systems, in their third annual list. Four of these ACOs are in Texas: Memorial Hermann Health System (Houston); Scott & White Healthcare Walgreens Well Network (Temple, Texas); Tenet Healthcare (Dallas); and Texas Health Resources (Arlington).

ASHRAE and the Indoor Air Quality Association have agreed in principle to join forces, combining resources to improve indoor air quality in the built environment. "This merger is beneficial to both ASHRAE and IAQA in that it strengthens the programs and services of both organizations," Tom Phoenix, ASHRAE president, said.

Legislative Updates
AHA supports the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ proposal to eliminate the requirement for a narrative explanation as part of the face-to-face encounter to certify a Medicare patient’s eligibility for home health care, AHA Executive Vice President Rick Pollack said in a comment letter on the proposed home health prospective payment system rule for calendar year 2015. AHA also encouraged the agency to only require a new face-to-face encounter for home health treatment of a new condition in the same 60-day period.
