By Brent Harris, Tarkett

Collaborative Partnerships are a crucial part of many healthcare programs. These new alliances enable us to have a more thorough understanding of all the processes and considerations in the healthcare built environment. Through these newly formed relationships there is access to new innovations, trends and thought leaders in healthcare today. Through these partnerships we will gain perspective on today’s trends, tomorrow’s outlook and most importantly, a glimpse into what the future may hold.

Center for Health Design (CHD) was formed in 1993 by a small cadre of pioneering healthcare and design professionals committed to advancing a singular idea – that design could be used to improve patient outcomes in healthcare environments. Now a far-reaching, international community, CHD's mission is to transform healthcare environments for a healthier, safer world through design research, education and advocacy (www.healthdesign.org). NXT Health was originally formed from a Department of Defense grant in 2006 to design the Patient Room of the Future. From that initial assignment, NXT has led collaborative research efforts that address innovative workflow concepts, architectural and interior design systems and advanced technology platforms that can enhance patient/physician communications.

There are four exclusive Founding Partners: Tarkett, DuPont, Osram-Sylvania and Steris (www.nxthealth.org). Planetree was founded in 1978 and is considered the first patient-centered hospital group in the United States. We are the only flooring manufacturer that Planetree is working with and will collaborating with Planetree in exploring ways the flooring can support patient centered care (elevating the flooring to a high level so it becomes an integrated part of patient centered care). This will include mock up installations or "living laboratory studies" on how our balanced choice approach to flooring can best be used in a healthcare setting. This hospital group was one of the first to offer both eastern and western medical services to their patients. It is a non-profit organization that provides education and information in a collaborative community of healthcare organizations, facilitating efforts to create patient-centered care in healing environments. (www.planetree.org). Practice Greenhealth is the source for environmental solutions for the healthcare sector and lends support to create better, safer, greener workplaces and communities and is the nation’s leading membership health care community for organization’s that have made a commitment to sustainable, environmentally preferred practices. Members include hospitals & healthcare systems, healthcare providers, manufacturers & service providers, architectural, engineering &, design firms, group purchasing organizations (GPOs) and various non-profit organizations. Practice GreenHealth is seen as the leader in the healthcare industry for information, tools and resources for sustainability. Their mission is to use sustainability as the bridge to a higher standard of care that is both patient-centered and cost effective. Tarkett is the first and only flooring manufacturer to join. Practice GreenHealth is a nonprofit membership organization founded on the principles of positive environmental stewardship and best practices by organizations in the healthcare community (www.practicegreenhealth.org).
