Larry Welch was recently in Grand Prairie, Texas where he held a Paving and Compaction seminar for the City of Grand Prairie Department of Public Works. The Paving and Compaction Seminar is one day in length and is ideal for Public Works Directors, City Streets Departments, Engineering Firms, County Commissioners, Precincts, and TxDOT. The seminar covers:

  • Safety: what is a safe working environment and how do you create one?

  • Planning for success: the Pre-paving meeting and other communication strategies

  • Milling and prep: surface preparation for successful overlays

  • Paving material handling: handle materials safely and efficiently from the stockpile to project

  • Paver principles: best practices and proper methods for quality paving

  • Compaction: best practices and proper methods for compaction

The TXAPA Scholarship Committee recently completed the development of a video promoting the program to potential donors. The video is housed in a hardcover "booklet" containing a small hi-def screen; the video plays automatically when opened.

In addition to raising awareness of the Scholarship Live and Silent Auction, the videos are being deployed in person to raise additional funds to go to directly to the Scholarship Program. TXAPA hopes to expand the program to support a greater number of students and to increase the individual award amount to keep pace with the cost of a higher-education. The video features interviews with TXAPA members, scholarship recipients, staff, and members of the board.

View the video and download a donation form at the link below.

Every year the Live and Silent Auction benefiting the TXAPA Scholarship Program is generously supplied by our Members who donate auction items and cash. As we near September, the Scholarship Auction Committee is hard at work procuring items for the auction. If your company would like to donate, please download the donation form below. If you have questions or need ideas as to what to donate, please contact the TXAPA offices at (512) 312-2099.

Work is set to begin on the establishment of the TXAPA Campus this July. The buildout on the existing structure which houses TXAPA's offices and the Hot Mix Asphalt Center is expected to last approximately three to four months. The restructure will include a 3,500 square foot multi-purpose room, eight labs, and three classrooms. The current TXAPA building will be joined to the newly purchased (2017) building directly behind it by a shared parking lot. The inclusion of this common space is intended to create a "campus vibe." The initiative to expand TXAPA's footprint in Buda is being driven by the Association's mission to serve the growing demands of the asphalt pavement industry in Texas.

Throughout the fourth quarter, TXAPA will host Fundamentals of Asphalt and Paving and Compaction Seminars in several Texas cities. Our Fundamentals/Paving and Compaction Seminars will last for two days and feature the Fundamentals curriculum on day one and Paving and Compaction on day two.

Our Paving and Compaction Seminars will last one day and feature only paving and compaction content.

These seminars are perfect for anyone who needs a solid asphalt foundation including City, County, and TxDOT personnel, Consulting Engineers and Engineering Firms.

From the Feature Safety First: How TxDOT’s Traffic Control Review Team is Helping to Improve Work Zone Safety Traffic channelization devices, such as signs, barricades, pavement markings, and message boards, are arguably the most important safety assets in any work zone. Unfortunately, deficiencies in these devices are often overlooked. Projects can go on for months, sometimes, years. During that time traffic channelization devices can gradually become run down. To those working on a project every day, these subtle changes may not seem serious, but deficiencies in traffic channelization devices need to be corrected because they can and do compromise driver and worker safety. Especially in the era of the smart phone, when distracted driving is all too common. People are wrapped up in their lives, rushing from here to there and even the most alert driver is going to experience issues if the devices used to keep traffic on course are difficult to see or interpret. So how can a district or contractor be vigilant about making sure their traffic control devices are implemented properly and in good condition? Enter TxDOT’s Traffic Control Review Team (TCRT).
