High-tech firms have played an increasingly important role in the U.S. office market, but boom times also bring rising costs, and both start-ups and major players have started hunting for spaces beyond the well-known hubs like Silicon Valley. Chicago-based JLL has just completed a national search which aims to help solve the problem. Its researchers sought out "hidden gems" of the tech world, metro areas that provide high concentrations of talent, but remain far more affordable than the top markets.

"One of the insights that I saw early on was the narrative that brokers didn't want to adopt technology was false," says Buildout founder and CEO Vishu Ramanathan. "It wasn't the people that were deficient, it was the software that was deficient." Now that software has become increasingly easy to build, customize and scale he thinks that industry professionals are going to be able to get better and better tools.

The BOMA 2017 Office Standard is scheduled to release in September. "The BOMA Office Standard is becoming more granular with the changes in the 2017 edition," Hokanson Cos. Chris Horsley said. "It reflects how we can classify and offer building amenities to remain competitive."
