April 2012
California Closets
On March 30-31, hopeful interior designers picked up their pencils, took a deep breath and undertook the NCIDQ exam. Each administration of this exam reminds us to once again thank the many members of our chapter who pull together and volunteer throughout the year to support design colleagues seeking to pass the NCIDQ exam.

This year, under the leadership of Erin Speck (jespeck@gwu.edu), March 19 marked the close of the 2012 Technical Review Advancement Course (TRAC). Our valued chapter members developed, updated and presented this popular 11-week interactive review course focused on the multiple choice sections of the exam. Unique to the Washington Metro Chapter, it has been almost 20 years since the course’s inception (with a short gap)—a real tribute to the value of this review for design professionals gearing to sit for the NCIDQ exam.

The TRAC course was particularly valuable to the spring exam candidates, since ASID put its highly regarded weekend STEP workshops on hold for the 2012 fiscal year in order to research its options for a more up-to-date delivery method. In order to fill this gap and complement our TRAC session, our chapter will host our own NCIDQ Practicum Prep course, engaging recognized STEP instructor Cheryl DiMenna this summer. We appreciate the efforts of Megan Koets (mkoets@gmail.com) in setting this up, as well as Marymount University’s continued generous support in providing a space at their Arlington campus. Please stay tuned to www.asiddcmetro.org for updates on when this class will occur.

For all of us, our "classwork" continues with valuable CEUs. Our chapter committee chair Beverly Gorman (bevhome@aol.com) and her amazing team work tirelessly all year long to ensure our members have every opportunity to affordably meet CEU requirements, with relevant topics for all interior design professionals. Please make a point to support ASID, and our chapter in particular, by choosing from the CEU options we have scheduled. The upcoming May 18 CEU is entitled How to Shoot Yourself: A Digital Photography Workshop for Interior Designers, and we hope to see you there!

Last but, never, ever least—none of these programs in support of educational growth and development could come together without Chapter Administrator Leslie Ehrmann and Administrative Assistant Mary Stolmeier. Our chapter is truly blessed to have such a dedicated and caring duo of staff professionals.

We are grateful to the volunteer force of Washington Metro chapter members dedicated to our professional development. If you would like to join their ranks, please reach out to me or to one of the chapter members involved in these endeavors.

Best regards,
Penni Wells, ASID

Status on Maryland's sunset provision: their bill has been heard in the House and Senate and has been voted on favorably several times thus far. We would encourage anyone eligible for certification in Maryland to apply to support this effort.

Virginia's status: deregulation of Certified Interior Designers was removed from the final joint House and Senate resolutions. The bill now goes to the governor for his approval or amendment.
