During the ASID Foundation fundraising event on March 7, Jeffrey Baldassari, President & CEO of The Taylor Companies, office furniture manufacturers established in 1816, presented the challenging CEU A Sustainable Approach on green manufacturing free to attendees. So many companies produce green products but at the expense of the environment. Baldassari walks what he talks. The Taylor factory in Bedford, Ohio actually sits on a 50-acre brownfield which they brought back to useable green acres! He spoke about our responsibility as interior designers to specify products which are not only green but manufactured green. We must actually ask for this process or it will not happen. Many companies advertise green designs, but if you penetrate their presentation you will find the product is only partially green and the rest spells devastation to forests, rivers and land. We are contributing to this if we accept it knowingly or not, by not asking. Many companies get paper certifications which are for commercial purposes only both to the giver and to the recipient.

We were so proud of the number of students who attended. We saw our future securely in place as an industry as we studied the student competition boards. We felt that every participant was a winner. We had a large contingent from VCU who support us yearly. We especially appreciated the attendance of the judges and faculty.

Our sponsors were generous in their support, notably The Taylor Companies who provided the speaker and underwrote much of the event, including the prize to the Best in Show winner. Significant Foundation donations were received from the following companies: AmericanEye, ASID Washington Metro Chapter, Baker, Knapp & Tubbs, Benjamin Moore & Co., Dominion Electric, Donghia, Galleria Carpets & Rugs, Sherwin-Williams and Stark. The following Individuals made generous donations: Bonnie Ammon, Penny Bonda, Sharon Borton, Mary Elizabeth Boyd, Vincent Carter, Leslie Ehrmann, Barbara Harries, Doug Hartsell, Joan Hazelwood, Larry Horne, Rebecca Hubler, Kristyn Ivey, Sarah Jenkins, Constance Mercer, Donna Ralston-Latham, Lucretia Reyes, Victoria Sanchez, Justine Sancho, Linda Sorrento, Claire Tamburro, Dimitra Tangires and Brooke Traeger. Others who made special contributions were: Cornerstone Advertising, who designed all the graphics for the sponsor donor form, the poster and the e-mailed invitation; Jeff Conti, who designed and donated the beautiful floral arrangements; Jennifer Sergent and Belinda Riggs in the Washington Design Center marketing department; chapter office staff Leslie Ehrmann and Mary Stolmeier; Student Affairs co-chairs Eileen Vitelli and Kristyn Ivey, with the able assistance of Karen Nakamaru and Student Rep to the Board, Bonnie Ammon. We are truly blessed to have so many people who support our programs.

We were very impressed with ASID’s new EVP/CEO, Randy Fiser, who, along with Foundation Manager Valerie O’Keefe, accepted the Washington Metro chapter’s gift. The Society's future is in good hands.

We want to thank everyone who gave so generously in support of our wonderful Foundation, which, in turn, "supports endeavors that capture and disseminate knowledge, encourage innovation and benefit the health, safety and welfare of the public through interior design research, scholarships and education."

We hope as we retire as co-liaisons that you will continue to support the Foundation financially and by your attendance at all future Foundation programs.

ASID Washington Metro Chapter president, Brooke Traeger, presented Larry Horne and Sarah Jenkins with an ASID Foundation award, given to our chapter for being the #1 contributor to the Foundation. We have won this award every year but one (when we were second) since 2005. We hope that the chapter will continue this tradition!
