Sofidel. Porcari, Italy, announced this past week that it has successfully started up a new wastewater purification plant for reducing the amount of clean water extracted from the groundwater table at Delicarta Paper Mill, in Porcari, Italy. The technology used makes it possible to recover up to 75% of wastewater, saving 350,000 cubic meters of fresh water annually.

The process involves three phases. In the first phase, the wastewater undergoes a biological process. In the second, for solid-liquid separation, it undergoes an ultrafiltration section. The third and last phase, aiming at eliminating the remaining salt fraction, consists of a reverse osmosis system.

The technical partner is Degremont, with General Electric handling the MBR (Membrane Biological Reactor) aspect of the process that makes beginning phases possible. The overall investment for the implementation of this project, the first of its particular kind in the pulp and paper industry, was EUR 3 million.

Sofidel is the second largest tissue producer in Europe, and the sixth largest in the world (1,050,000 metric tpy). Its flagship brand, "Regina," is present in all major markets. Other brands are Softis, Le Trèfle, Sopalin, Inversoft, Nouvelle Soft, Thirst Pockets, KittenSoft, Yumy, Soft & Easy, Volare, Onda, Papernet, Heavenly Choice, Heavenly Soft, Confidence.
