TAPPI Standards in Ballot

The TAPPI Standards regulations require public review of standards that are up for ballot. TAPPI members can view any drafts that are in ballot by logging in to the TAPPI web site (www.tappi.org), clicking on "My TAPPI," and then clicking on the "Standards Public Draft Review" link on the left side of the page. If you would like to review and comment on any draft and are not a member of the corresponding Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG), you may view the draft on line or you may request a copy of the draft being balloted by writing to standards@tappi.org. TAPPI members may join SSIGs as permanent members; go to the Subject Category page to download forms for this purpose. Nonmembers of TAPPI may join any SSIG as a voting member; to do so, send a message to standards@tappi.org to receive a copy of the draft and a ballot.

Listed below are TAPPI Standards that have recently gone out for ballot to the corresponding Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG). The date in parentheses is the closing date for voting.

T 428 "Hot water extractable acidity or alkalinity of paper" (November 2, 2012)
T 406 "Reducible sulfur in paper and paperboard" (November 5, 2012)
T 653 "Specular gloss of paper and paperboard at 20 degrees" (November 9, 2012)
T 495 "Bending number of paperboard" (November 26, 2012)

General Announcements

TAPPI is in the initial stages of developing a new TAPPI Standard or TIP for verifying the recyclability of aqueous barrier coatings. We are seeking technical experts in the area of recycling aqueous coatings to work on this proposed standard. Experts do not have to be TAPPI members, although a TAPPI member among the group would need to serve as working group chair for the project..

If you are interested in participating in initial discussion, please contact Scott Springmier (sspringmier@tappi.org).

Work continues on TAPPI Standard T NEW (WI 3021) "Standard Terms and Their Definitions for Cellulose Nanomaterials." A third draft has been prepared, after hosting two webinars with international participation, and will be released soon for comments. If you are interested in participating in this process, please contact Colleen Walker at TAPPI at cwalker@tappi.org.

Getting started is easy. Do you have just a general idea for a standard, or are you farther along and have a substantial draft? If you just have a general idea for a standard or TIP, complete the New Idea Submission Form. TAPPI will review your idea and identify an appropriate committee or group to work on your suggestion. If you are further along, send an initial draft to standards@tappi.org. From there, the TAPPI Standards Manager will guide you through the appropriate process to finalize and approve the new document.

SSIG Members Needed

September 25 was the target ballot date for the five-year review of T 577. However, when the mail list was selected, only 7 people were on the Standards-Specific Interest Group (SSIG). The minimum required is 10.

The scope of this method is: This procedure is used to determine the score bend resistance of a scored and unscored sample of a paperboard carton. Score bend resistance of a score on a paper carton is an important parameter to determine the force required to close a carton flap during a product filling operation on a packaging machine.

If you have an interest in this standard and would like to join the SSIG and receive ballots for this review, please send a message to standards@tappi.org by November 2, 2012.
