TAPPI Standards in Ballot

The TAPPI Standards regulations require public review of standards that are up for ballot. TAPPI members can view any drafts that are in ballot by logging in to the TAPPI web site (www.tappi.org), clicking on "My TAPPI," and then clicking on the "Standards Public Draft Review" link on the left side of the page. If you would like to review and comment on any draft and are not a member of the corresponding Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG), you may view the draft on line or you may request a copy of the draft being balloted by writing to standards@tappi.org. TAPPI members may join SSIGs as permanent members; go to the Subject Category page to download forms for this purpose. Nonmembers of TAPPI may join any SSIG as a voting member; to do so, send a message to standards@tappi.org to receive a copy of the draft and a ballot.

Listed below are TAPPI Standards that have recently gone out for ballot to the corresponding Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG). The date in parentheses is the closing date for voting.

T 665 "Analysis of talc" (February 3, 2012)
T 282 "Hexeneuronic acid content of chemical pulp" (February 20, 2012)
T 483 "Odor of packaging materials" (February 20, 2012)
T 559 "Grease resistance test for paper and paperboard" (February 20, 2012)
T 234 "Coarseness of pulp fibers" (February 20, 2012)

SSIG Members Needed

Work is now beginning on draft development of a new standard for cellulose nanomaterials. This standard shall establish and define standard terms for cellulose nanomaterial, the different types of cellulose nanomaterials and the hierarchical structure of cellulose nanomaterial terms.

If you would like to join the Standard Specific Interest Group (SSIG) for this standard, and receive a ballot for voting, please notify the Standards Department at standards@tappi.org or by fax at +1-770-446-6947 no later than January 31, 2012 (this is an extended deadline from the one announced in the December 2011 STAR). Please reference WI 3021 in your communication.

Standards Coming Up For Review

The system for review and development of TAPPI Standards requires an announcement of review dates so that any interested TAPPI parties may access the drafts, submit comments, and/or join the Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) to cast an official vote.

Listed below are the Standards that will be up for review in 2012. The date indicated is the target date on which the draft will be posted for review by TAPPI members in the Members Only section of the TAPPI website. On that date, you may go to the home page (www.tappi.org), log on with your member ID and password, place your cursor over "Membership," and select "My TAPPI" from the dropdown box. When your personal page appears, click on the "Standards Public Draft Review" link on the left-hand side. You do not have to be a member of the Standard Specific Interest Group to comment on the draft.

Nonmembers of TAPPI who wish to be part of the voting for any Standard should send a message to standards@tappi.org and request voting membership on the corresponding SSIG, prior to the target ballot date, if possible. Anyone who joins the SSIG before the target balloting date will receive a notice of the ballot. Nonmembers cannot access the drafts online, but they will be sent copies by email upon request after receiving the notice of ballot by email.

If you have joined the Standard Specific Interest Group for any Standard, you will receive a notice for ballot at the proper time with instructions for casting your vote and making your comments. If you wish to join the Standard Specific Interest Group for a particular Standard, please go to the Subject Categories for Standards page or contact the Standards Department at TAPPI (standards@tappi.org), or phone +1-770-209-7276 or fax +1-770-446-6947).

Did You Know

... that many of the TAPPI Standard Test Methods require the use of reference materials for calibrating the instruments used in testing? As an example, Optical properties tests (brightness, whiteness, and other tests of appearance properties) are tests where the need for specialized reference materials is widely recognized. The use of certified reference measures of mass, distance, time, and volume are also widely used within the paper industry measurement organizations for verifying calibration of basis weight balances, cutting dies and templates, tensile testers, to name only a few of the more obvious examples.

As assistance to those needing a source of reference calibrating materials or equipment, TAPPI maintains a Reference Materials List which is described in TAPPI Standard Practice T 1211. Suppliers of standard materials for TAPPI Standard Test Methods that would like to be placed on the Reference Materials List are encouraged to consult this Standard Practice for guidance on the steps to take in order to be listed. In addition to reading the requirements of TAPPI T 1211, interested parties are encouraged to contact Charles Bohanan, TAPPI Director of Standards and Awards, at standards@tappi.org to discuss specific needs of the Reference Materials program or assistance in becoming a listed material source.
