New or Revised Standards, TIPs, and Useful Methods

TIP 0402-16 "Guidelines for inspection and nondestructive examination of paper machine dryers" (Revision)
TIP 0420-14 "Guide for increasing the maximum allowable working pressure of cast iron, ASME constructed paper machine dryers" (Revision and title change)

Special note: Documents appearing in the TAPPI online version of the Standards and TIPs are updated once a month (usually around the 15th). So it is possible that there is a delay between the publication announcement and the posting online. If you are a subscriber to the online access to Standards and TIPs and you are in a hurry for new documents that have not yet been posted, you can send a request to standards@tappi.org.

TAPPI Standards in Ballot

The TAPPI Standards regulations require public review of standards that are up for ballot. TAPPI members can view any drafts that are in ballot by logging in to the TAPPI web site (www.tappi.org), clicking on "My TAPPI," and then clicking on the "Standards Public Draft Review" link on the left side of the page. If you would like to review and comment on any draft and are not a member of the corresponding Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG), you may view the draft online or you may request a copy of the draft being balloted, by writing to standards@tappi.org. TAPPI members may join SSIGs as permanent members; go to the Subject Category page to download forms for this purpose. Nonmembers of TAPPI may join any SSIG as a voting member; to do so, send a message to standards@tappi.org to receive a copy of the draft and a ballot.

Listed below are TAPPI Standards that have recently gone out for ballot to the corresponding Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG). The date in parentheses is the closing date for voting.

T 1011 "Basis weight of fiberglass mats" (July 2, 2010)
T 1012 "Moisture content of fiber glass mats" (July 6, 2010)
T 657 "Sampling of fillers and pigments" (july 19, 2010)
T New (WI 3018) "Aerobiological fungal growth of paper under extreme indoor air quality" (July 19, 2010)
T 1013 "Loss on ignition of fiber glass mats" (July 23, 2010)
T 810 "Bursting strength of corrugated board" (title change) (July 23, 2010)
T 1014 "Moisture sensitivity of fiber glass mats" (July 26, 2010)

General Announcements

A proposal has been made to reinstate withdrawn standard T 421 "Qualitative (including optical microscopic) analysis of mineral filler and mineral coating of paper." This standard was withdrawn in 2003 by the Quality and Standards Management Committee due to lack of progress in its review.
The scope of the method is: This method describes procedures which may be used for the qualitative determination and identification of the mineral constituents of filled and coated papers. Due to the similarity in chemical composition and physical size and shape of some of the various possible constituents contained in a given paper specimen, more precise quantitative methods may at times be required for positive identification. It is recommended that one become thoroughly familiar with this method by analyzing paper samples of known mineral component content.

Because the Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) is currently short of members, this announcement is to solicit new members of the SSIG.

Any individuals who are interested in this Standard may join the SSIG to receive ballots when this method is ready for vote. If you would like to join the SSIG for this project, please notify the Standards Department at mailto:standards@tappi.orgor by fax at +1-770-446-6947 no later than July 15, 2010.

Standards Coming Up For Review

The system for review and development of TAPPI Standards requires an announcement of review dates so that any interested TAPPI parties may access the drafts, submit comments, and/or join the Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) to cast an official vote.

Listed below are the Standards that will be up for review from July 2010 through December 2010. The date indicated is the target date on which the draft will be posted for review by TAPPI members in the Members Only section of the TAPPI website. Go to the home page (www.tappi.org), log on with your member ID and password, place your cursor over "Membership," and select "My TAPPI" from the dropdown box. When your personal page appears, click on the "Standards Public Draft Review" link on the left-hand side. You do not have to be a member of the Standard Specific Interest Group to comment on the draft.

Nonmembers of TAPPI who wish to be part of the voting for any Standard should send a message to standards@tappi.org and request voting membership on the corresponding SSIG, prior to the target ballot date, if possible. Anyone who joins the SSIG before the target balloting date will receive a notice of the ballot. Nonmembers cannot access the drafts online, but they will be sent copies by email upon request after receiving the notice of ballot by email.

If you have joined the Standard Specific Interest Group for any Standards, you will receive a notice for ballot at the proper time with instructions for casting your vote and making your comments. If you wish to join the Standard Specific Interest Group for a particular Standard, please go to the Subject Categories for Standards page or contact the Standards Department at TAPPI (standards@tappi.org), or phone +1-770-209-7276 or fax +1-770-446-6947).

Did You Know
... that to participate in the balloting process for TAPPI Standards you must sign up for the Standard-Specific Interest Groups (SSIGs)? Although drafts for ballot are available for anyone – members or nonmembers – to review and comment on, you must be a TAPPI member in good standing to receive official ballots and cast a vote on new or revised Standards. Each Standard has its own SSIG – so you have to sign up for each Standard that you have an interest in. Links to all of the SSIGs (by subject category) can be found on the Subject Category for Standards web page.
