The Cham Paper Group, Switzerland, has won the Zug (city in Switzerland) Innovation Prize 2012. The CHF 20,000 ($21,094) prize was awarded this past week to the company by the Mayor of Zug, Matthias Michel, to mark this year's Zug Innovation and Technology Day. The Jury selected Cham to receive the prize for its successful development of "a ground-breaking specialty paper, Barnamic.

Barnamic is a product range of innovative specialty papers that can be used on their own as packaging solutions for food products. Barnamic provides the protection required for packaged food, with barrier functions directly integrated into the paper, and can therefore replace complicated composites made out of various materials (such as plastic and aluminum). During the past several years, the Cham Paper Group has invested some CHF 20 million in curtain coating technology, allowing it to produce specialty paper products such as Barnamic.

Prize money awarded to the company will be used to purchase laboratory test equipment that the group requires to optimize and refine the Barnamic product range.

At its three locations in Switzerland and Italy, Cham Paper Group, established in 1657, develops and manufactures specialty papers for use in the consumer goods, industrial release, and digital imaging sectors. The consumer goods sector encompasses papers for flexible packaging and base papers for label printing in the food, non-food, tobacco, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries. In the industrial release sector, Cham supplies silicone-base papers for release liners used in graphical applications and for adhesive tapes and labels. The company also supplies base papers for process liners used in industrial casting and laminating process applications. Facestock papers for the self-adhesive industry round off the range. In addition to large-format inkjet papers for indoor and outdoor applications, the digital imaging sector also includes sublimation papers for digital textile printing.

Resolute Forest Products, Montreal, Qué., Canada, this week announced the indefinite idling of kraft mill and paper machine number five (PM 5) at its pulp and paper operation in Fort Frances, Ont., Canada. The kraft mill has an annual production capacity of approximately 200,000 metric tons of market pulp, while PM 5 has an annual capacity of 105,000 metric tons of groundwood specialty printing papers.

"The markets for these products are challenging and are expected to remain so. The kraft mill situation is particularly difficult given Fort Frances' operating configuration and the recent decision by a key customer to stop consuming the pulp supplied by Resolute to its mill," said Resolute's President and CEO, Richard Garneau. "Our kraft mill's drying capacity is limited to about 40% of its production capacity, making it impossible to continue operating the mill in a profitable manner."

Resolute is exploring alternative product possibilities for its Fort Frances pulp mill, which will be idled in a manner that will protect the equipment.

The idling of PM 5 is driven by the decrease in consumption as well as the high value of the Canadian dollar.

"We will monitor market conditions closely and work with key stakeholders to explore ways to improve the mill's cost position," added Garneau.

The running down of fiber inventories and orderly shutdown of the Fort Frances kraft mill is expected to be completed by late November. PM 5 will also continue to operate until late November. Approximately 239 employees will be impacted by the idling.

Resolute says it will work with affected employees, all levels of government, and other local authorities on programs to lessen the impact of the idling. Resolute employees affected by this idling will also be considered for job vacancies and opportunities at other company facilities. In all cases, employees will be treated in accordance with the applicable collective agreements and Provincial legislation.

Resolute Forest Products owns or operates 22 pulp and paper mills and 22 wood products facilities in the U.S., Canada, and South Korea.

Market Roundup
Softwood pulp prices are rebounding in North America, up $20/metric ton in November for a second consecutive month, according to Mark Wilde with Deutsche Bank. North American NBSK (northern bleached softwood kraft) pulp rose to $870/metric ton. The key drivers are seasonally stronger demand, increased shipments to China, lower mill inventories, and autumn maintenance outages, Wilde explains.

North American hardwood pulp prices were essentially flat m/m in November, except NBHK (northern bleached hardwood kraft) pulp, which was up $5-$10/metric ton, Wilde says.

The global pulp market started to recover this fall after having been in decline for more than a year, according to Wood Resources Quarterly (WRQ), Seattle, Wash., USA. World shipments increased 11% from July to September. Softwood pulp (NBSK—northern bleached softwood kraft) prices have trended downward for more than a year from their record highs in the summer of 2011. This relatively long-lasting price decline seems to have come to an end this fall and higher prices are currently being negotiated.

Hardwood pulp (BHKP—bleached hardwood kraft pulp) prices have not experienced the same price fall as NBSK prices, WRQ notes. The recent price trends for pulp have resulted in a minimal price differential between softwood and hardwood pulp.

Lightweight coated paper prices in North America rose $5 - $10/ton in November as producers pushed a $40 - $60/ton price hike, Mark Wilde of Deutsche Bank reports. No. 5, 40-lb offset rolls were at $880 - $920/ton, up $25/ton since September. This is the second price hike attempt of 2012 after producers implemented ˜50% of the $40/ton price hike during the summer. A seasonal pick-up in demand as well as widespread capacity closures has tightened supplies and raised operating rates.

Many observers expect a return to tougher markets by year-end as seasonal demand eases. Another issue is competition from lower-priced SC grades.

North American uncoated groundwood paper prices were flat in November, Mark Wilde of Deutsche Bank says. A $40/ton October 1 SC price hike does not appear to have gained much traction, he notes, adding that the real risk is pricing pressure in the coming months.

"The two key issues are anemic demand, and incremental supply from two restarts (Port Hawkesbury, N.S., Canada's 395,000 metric tpy SC-A machine, and Resolute Forest Products' 168,000 metric tpy SC-B at Dolbeau, Que., Canada), amidst a very weak demand environment," Wilde explains.

In the third quarter, wood fiber prices fell in the local currencies in most of the regions covered by the Wood Resources Quarterly (WRQ), Seattle, Wash., USA. However, because the U.S. dollar weakened against most currencies, wood prices in U.S. dollar terms did not decline as much this quarter.

The Softwood Wood Fiber Price Index (SFPI), which is based in U.S. dollars, was down another 0.5% from the second quarter of 2012 to $100.05/odmt (oven dry metric ton), WRQ reports. It was the fifth consecutive quarterly decline and the index has now come down 8.7% since early 2010. The biggest price declines were seen in Northwest U.S., Germany, and Russia.

Hardwood fiber prices started to increase in some regions in the third quarter, which resulted in the first increase of the Hardwood Wood Fiber Price Index (HFPI) in more than a year. The Index increased by $1.56/odmt from the second quarter of 2012 price to $106.44/odmt in the third quarter of 2012. Hardwood fiber prices increased the most in Russia, Eastern Canada, and Brazil.

Albany International Corp., Rochester, N.H., USA, reports that its subsidiary, Albany International France S.A.S., has initiated discussions with the employee Works Council regarding a proposal to restructure operations at the company's Machine Clothing production facilities in Sélestat and St. Junien. The proposed restructuring would reduce employment by approximately 200 positions at these locations.

The proposal is driven by a deterioration of machine clothing market conditions in Europe, as the company previously reported. The proposal aims to maintain operations in each location, but restructured in a manner that will improve competitiveness, increase efficiency, and promote the viability of these locations in the long term.

An earlier proposal to close the facility in St. Junien, and relocate production to Sélestat, made in February of this year, was later withdrawn. Since that time, the company's employees and management have conducted a number of meetings, exchanged information, and explored a number of ideas focused on addressing the current challenges facing machine clothing operations in France as market conditions in Europe continue to decline.

President and CEO Joseph Morone noted that "as we reported in our third-quarter earnings release, market conditions in the machine clothing segment in Europe have continued to deteriorate. Our machine clothing sales last quarter were down 16% compared with last year, which is consistent with the overall European industry. Given structural conditions in Europe, we anticipate further deterioration in 2013.

"During the past several years, we have undertaken a significant and deliberate process of aligning our global capacity to the long-term structure of the machine clothing industry. This restructuring process led to the closing of 12 plants across the globe, including eight in North America and three in Europe, and significant downsizing at two other European plants, along with investment in new capacity in Asia and South America. The proposed actions in France represent the last step in this global restructuring process."

Albany International is a global advanced textiles and materials processing company, with two core businesses. Albany International's Machine Clothing group is a global producer of custom-designed fabrics and belts for the paper, nonwovens, and other process industries. Albany Engineered Composites is a supplier of engineered composite parts for the aerospace industry.

Albany International operates 18 plants in 11 countries and employs 4,300 people worldwide.

PaperlinX Ltd., Australia, has announced approval for the rapid implementation of further restructuring and cost reduction initiatives in its businesses in the U.K. in response to the ongoing depressed trading conditions in Europe. Restructuring in the U.K. will cost $3 million to implement, the company says, adding however that, in conjunction with discretionary cost savings, it will deliver estimated benefits of $13 million on a full year basis. It is anticipated that the program will be cost neutral in financial year 2013 as the benefits are realized over the balance of the financial year.

The company is also taking similar action to recalibrate the cost base of its businesses in Continental Europe to match current demand, and has taken the view that if restructuring costs cannot bring benefits, it will consider asset rationalization. Based on decisions made to date, in total, European restructuring in the 2013 financial year will see 370 employees leave the business. This includes an additional 200 employees identified through this new plan.

In addition, PaperlinX appointed Andrew Price as an executive director to work with management to add weight to the restructuring efforts in Europe. Price will relocate to Europe for a provisional six month period, which may be extended. The terms of his remuneration during this time will involve a modest fixed component and an incentive, still to be finalized, but related to share price improvements.

Commenting on the announcement, PaperlinX Chairman Michael Barker said that "this new board is fully committed to taking decisive action to restore PaperlinX to profitability. This new restructuring plan and Andrew's appointment demonstrate our immediate priorities. We will continue to work to strengthen our already profitable businesses in Australia, New Zealand, Asia, and Canada and direct the future of the company towards a diversified range of products with growth ahead of them."

Relevant competition authorities have approved the previously announced merger of Sweden-based companies Billerud AB and Korsnäs AB. All conditions for the combination are thus fulfilled. Accordingly, completion of the combination is set to occur today, November 29.

The merger, announced this past June, was conditional upon, among other conditions, approval of Billerud's shareholders as well as approval of relevant competition authorities. Shareholders approved the merger at the extraordinary general meeting held September 14.

"As a result of the combination with Korsnäs, we will become a leading player in the packaging paper business with a strengthened offer and a strong platform for future growth. The new company BillerudKorsnäs will be able to offer customers a better and wider range of products and solution. We will now, with full force, work with the integration and create a world leading company," said Per Lindberg, president and CEO of Billerud.

The European Commission's decision to approve the combination is conditional upon the divestment of a paper machine located at the production facility in Gävle (PM 2). The sales of white kraft and sack paper products manufactured on PM 2 amounted to approximately 2% of the new Group's total combined sales volume for the year 2011. Furthermore, BillerudKorsnäs will, for a period of time, offer to deliver certain supply inputs such as pulp, steam, and electricity to the paper machine.

"The condition for the European Commission's decision concerns a limited part of the new group's business operations and does not have a significant impact on the business logic or the expected synergies of the combination" Lindberg added.

This past November 7, Arctic Paper S.A., Poland, announced its public offer to buy all of the shares in Rottneros AB of Stockholm, Sweden, and on the same day, the Rottneros Board of Directors recommended that shareholders accept the offer. The Rottneros board this week, however, reported that it has been informed in writing by shareholders (including Skagen Vekst and Peter Gyllenhammar via companies, that together control more than 10% of the capital and voting power in Rottneros), that they will not accept the Arctic Paper bid.

In view of this new information—which means that Arctic Paper's offer will not be accepted to an extent that it would obtain more than 90% and thereby be able to request the compulsory redemption of outstanding shares and consequently that a merger cannot be implemented—the Rottneros board made the following comments:

  • The primary reason for the position adopted by the board of directors is that a merger of the two companies may be expected to generate synergies of approximately SEK 80 million and also that, from the perspective of both results and cash flow, a merger would balance out the two companies' very strong dependency on fluctuations in pulp prices. A precondition for realizing a substantial proportion of these synergies is that the companies are completely amalgamated and that one head office and one management group be phased out. In addition, synergies have been identified on the financial side, though this also presupposes that the companies join together. The other significant synergy includes the optimization of transport costs, that would probably be considerably more difficult to achieve if the companies continue to operate as autonomous businesses.
  • The board's recommendation remains unchanged, i.e., that the companies merge to enable these synergies to be realized. The fact that two major owners controlling more than 10% of the capital and voting power have given notice that they will not accept the bid means in that event that a merger cannot be effected and that it would thus not be possible to secure most of these synergies.

Rottneros is a producer of market pulp. The group includes the parent company Rottneros AB and its subsidiaries Rottneros Bruk AB and Vallviks Bruk AB. The Group also includes the wood procurement company Rottneros Baltic SIA in Latvia. Rottneros has some 298 employees and had a turnover of approximately SEK 1.5 billion in 2011.

Zhanjiang Chenming Pulp & Paper Co., China, reports that its greenfield pulp mill in the Guangdong Province has reached a nominal production capacity of 700,000 metric tpy in world record time—only 121 days from startup. It has also produced 100% of design capacity during the first full operating year, establishing another world record. All key production technologies and startup supervision were provided by Andritz, Graz, Austria.

Andritz was awarded the contract to deliver all process technologies for the bleached hardwood kraft pulp mill in 2009. The mill started up in September 2011 and reached its nominal average production capacity only four months later (measured as a 30-day moving average). This represents a new "world record" based on officially available figures of greenfield pulp mills, eclipsing the record set by another Andritz customer in South America. This extremely fast startup has an important economic element in that it greatly enhances a mill's return on investment, Andritz notes.

Andritz's scope of supply included the wood handling system, the fiberline (cooking, washing, screening, bleaching, pulp dryer, and bale finishing), and the recovery island (evaporation, recovery boiler, and white liquor plant). In addition, Andritz delivered stock preparation systems for the mill's new paper machines.

Containerboard/Packaging
Research and Markets, Dublin, Ireland, reports that it has added U.K.-based TechNavio's new Global Cardboard Box and Container Manufacturing Market 2011-2015 report to its current offering. TechNavio's analysts forecast the global cardboard box and container manufacturing market to grow at a CAGR of 4.8% over the period 2011-2015.

One of the key factors contributing to this market growth is increasing demand in the food and beverage industry. The global cardboard box and container manufacturing market has also been witnessing technological advancements in manufacturing processes. However, the high cost of production could pose a challenge to the growth of this market.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from TechNavio's "Others" team said that "the global cardboard box and container manufacturing market is witnessing the trend of technological advancement in the manufacturing process. Vendors are using highly advanced machinery such as inline automatic board and box machinery that makes the whole manufacturing process very smooth, easy, and fast. Complete automation is also improving profitability by reducing the amount of human resources required and increasing production. Thus technological advancement is leading to the growth of the global cardboard box and container manufacturing market.''

According to the report, the increasing demand for cardboard boxes and containers in the food and beverage industry is one of the major growth drivers of the market. The food and beverage industry uses a wide range of packaging products, from folding cartons to sanitary drink cartons. Folding cartons are used to pack food directly and ensure that the food products are safe from external harmful contaminants. Similarly, the sanitary drink cartons used to pack liquid food products such as milk and juices also ensure the safety of the product for consumers. Thus the need for safety in food products is leading to the high demand for cardboard boxes and containers.

New Products
BASF, Germany, reports that its research, development, and application specialists have jointly completed work on new polymeric surface sizing agents (PSA) that allow papermakers to significantly improve sizing costs. Traditionally, PSA for the liner segment used cationic polymers, the company notes, adding, however, that this limited the coloration to certain product ranges.

With Basoplast® 450 P, BASF introduces a new, cost-efficient PSA for the packaging segment. The product is suited for linerboard grades and complements BASF's offer of anionic PSA in the graphical paper market. By replacing cationic PSA in packaging with Basoplast 450 P, paper manufacturers now can adjust the desired coloration in the surface with direct dyes, which can provide a more cost-efficient solution than incumbent systems, BASF explains.

In addition to the new opportunities for cost-efficient coloration, the new Basoplast 450 P agent shows no foaming tendency or sensitivity to pH or starch type and can be used in both size or film-press. It further has received food contact approval (BfR XXXVI, FDA 176.170, 176.180).

"With Basoplast 450 P, we offer the first anionic polymeric sizing agent able to compete against cationic polymeric surface sizing agents traditionally used in liner and board. We recently had various mill trials throughout Europe and in consequence are able to promptly launch the product in the market. But, this invention also required cross-divisional support through the know-how- and production Verbund of BASF, especially the Petrochemicals Division. It shows that BASF can be very successful if we act as one company," said Dr. Frank Höfer, VP marketing, Paper Chemicals Europe.

The reliability, the company explains, is achieved with fiber optic technology that eliminates electronics and light source from the extremely hot environment inside of the paper machine hood. The sensor has built-in redundancy and self-diagnostics to eliminate false breaks effectively.

The new KB2 model is versatile; with both RGB and IR light sources, it is suitable for all applications in paper and board machines. Startup is very fast and easy due to the simple setup and calibration procedures, KPM points out. The built-in air purge system keeps the sensor head clean from dust and other impurities in the paper machine, and guarantees 100% accurate break detection.

For nearly 100 years, being part of the TAPPI community has meant members have the opportunity to easily connect with other industry experts from around the world.  With the 21st century well underway, that international support is still going strong. Take young professional Ying Xue, for instance.

A native of Hangzhou, China, Ying received her B.E. degree in Light Chemical Engineering from South China University of Technology in 2007, and then her Ph.D. in Forest Biomaterials from North Carolina State University (NCSU) in 2011.  Throughout her academic pursuits, Ying says she came across one resource that was consistently touted as one of the best – TAPPI.

"I first learned about TAPPI at South China University of Technology," Ying explains. "I was working on a project utilizing biomass and most of our characterizations were performed using TAPPI Standards."  When she moved on to grad school, Ying says the TAPPI acronym showed up in many research papers, course packs, and nearly every chapter of her thesis.  It was at that point she realized, "I need to be a member."

Although she waited until she had landed her first professional position to join, Ying says that TAPPI greatly influenced her career choice while still in school. She notes the NCSU chapter is a very active one and while there she attended several meetings, one of which featured working P&P professionals who shared their career stories.

"That meeting convinced me that this was the field for me," and at that very moment she decided to switch her degree from a Master's to a Ph.D. She believed then, and does even more firmly now, that the P&P industry generously supports young professionals when they make the decision to pursue their careers in it.

Her advice to new careerists and current students?  "TAPPI is a helpful resource, not only for learning knowledge at school and finding a job, but also to obtain new thoughts and ideas from annual conferences."  She calls her current position as a research associate in the Fiber Technology Solutions Group at International Paper's Cincinnati Technology Center her "dream job" and credits TAPPI and its NCSU chapter with helping her find it.

Ying Xue's on TAPPI's November Member Spotlight Page.

The Secret, Second Edition

What Great Leaders Know and Do

By: Ken Blanchard & Mark Miller

  • Uses the popular "business fable" format that Ken pioneered
  • Explains the five essential practices exhibited by the best leaders and provides practical ideas on how to make these a reality in your life.

At one time or another, everyone in a position of authority-whether in a multinational corporation or a local volunteer group-wonders what the key to great leadership is. And who better to answer that question than the team of Ken Blanchard, whose books on leadership have sold over 20 million copies, and Mark Miller, who worked his way up from line worker to vice president of one of the largest fast-food chains in the country. In The Secret, Blanchard and Miller use the uniquely accessible "business fable" format that Blanchard pioneered to get at the heart of what makes a leader truly able to inspire and motivate people. Debbie Brewster, recently promoted and struggling, finds herself about to lose her job due to poor performance. In an attempt to save her career, she enrolls in a new mentoring program offered by her company. Much to her surprise, Debbie finds her mentor is none other than Jeff Brown, the president of the company. Debbie decides that she is going to ask her new mentor the one question she feels she desperately needs answered: "What is the secret of great leaders?" Jeff's immediate answer-that great leaders serve their followers-completely flummoxes Debbie. Over the next 18 months, Jeff helps Debbie discover and explore five fundamental ways that leaders lead through service.

The Secret puts what Blanchard and Miller have learned about leadership in a form that anyone can easily understand, embrace, and pursue. It is a book that will benefit not only those who read it, but also the organizations they work in an the people who look to them for guidance.

The second edition includes revised and updated content including:
